Description:

PLANT: upright to spreading growth habit, medium height
SHOOT: short to medium length

LEAF: short to medium length, medium to broad, circular, obtuse apex, no variegation, medium green

PEDICEL: short, absent or very weak anthocyanin colouration
CALYX: medium length, narrow
FLOWER: single type, medium to broad
COROLLA: medium degree of lobing, weak undulation
COROLLA LOBE (INNER SIDE): weak conspicuousness of purple veins; mainly medium purple red (RHS 61C but more blue at margin) when fully opened, small area of dark brown (RHS N77A) secondary colour at transition to corolla tube, absent or very few flowers with different sized area of secondary colour; mainly medium purple red (RHS N66A) when newly opened, medium purple red (RHS 54B) when aged, truncate apex
COROLLA TUBE: broad, dark brown purple (RHS N186C) on inner side, absent or very weak conspicuousness of veins on inner side, dark brown to medium brown (RHS 177A-B) on outer side
ANTHER: whitish pollen

Origin & Breeding History: 'PEHY0053' originated from a controlled cross between the female parent, a proprietary breeding line designated 'BA0385-1V', and the male parent, a proprietary breeding line designated 'BA0065-1V', conducted in Enkhuizen, the Netherlands in October 2015. The new variety 'PEHY0053' was finally selected in May 2016 based on flower colour, branching habit and flower size.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'PEHY0053' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination application number 2021/1885, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office in Angers, France. The trials were conducted by the Bundessortenamt in Hannover, Germany in 2022. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
