Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Silver Falls'

Summary: The upper side of the young leaf blade of ‘Crested Surf' has medium grey green secondary colour while that of ‘Silver Falls' has a brown grey secondary colour. The upper side of the rachis of ‘Crested Surf' is dark brown purple while that of ‘Silver Falls' is dark green with a dark red main vein. The upper side of the leaf blade of ‘Crested Surf' has a medium brown green secondary colour while that of ‘Silver Falls' has a medium grey green secondary colour. The apex of the pinna on the leaf blade of ‘Crested Surf' is acute with a crested tip while that of ‘SilverFalls' is acute.

YOUNG LEAF (UPPER SIDE): dark green (RHS NN137C), medium grey green (RHS 191C) secondary colour flush towards tips, dark brown purple (RHS N186C) tertiary colour flush towards veins
YOUNG LEAF (LOWER SIDE): mainly dark brown green (RHS NN137D), medium brown green (RHS 147B) secondary colour flushed towards tips, dark brown purple (RHS N186C) tertiary colour flush towards veins
RACHIS (UPPER SIDE): dark brown purple (RHS N186C), absent or very weak pubescence
LEAF: bipinnate
LEAF BLADE (UPPER SIDE): mainly dark green (RHS NN137B), medium brown green (RHS 191A) secondary colour flush towards tips
LEAF BLADE: medium density of pinna arrangement, yellow grey (RHS 156A) sorus
LEAF BLADE (LOWER SIDE): mainly dark green (RHS NN137B), dark brown green (RHS NN137D) secondary colour flush towards tips
PINNA: elongated, acute apex with crested tips, blunt pinnula

Origin & Breeding History: 'Crested Surf' originated from a cross between two proprietary unnamed selections in Zeeland, Michigan, USA in 2012. The new variety was selected in June 2015 based on plant growth habit and foliage type. Asexual reproduction of 'Crested Surf' by division was first conducted in Zeeland, Michigan, USA in 2015.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'Crested Surf' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number ATT4, purchased from the Naktuinbouw in Roelofarendsveen, the Netherlands. The trial was conducted at the Naktuinbuow in Roelofarendsveen, the Netherlands from 2022 to 2023. Colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
