Description:

'Lizzy' is a perennial phlox variety with an upright to bushy growth habit with sparse branching. The stem is light to medium green in colour with no anthocyanin colouration, weak glaucosity, and no pubescence. The stem is smooth and medium in thickness. The leaves are a simple type arranged in an opposite fashion. The leaf is elliptic in shape, has an acute shaped apex and an attenuate shaped base with a leaf blade margin that is entire. There is no pubescence on the upper or lower side of the leaf blade. The upper side of the leaf blade is dark green in colour with very weak to weak glaucosity. The lower leaf blade is medium green in colour and there is no variegation in the leaf blade. The leaf blade has a petiole present. There is one flowering period that is mid to late in the season with a medium duration. The flower type is a panicle inflorescence. The flower attitude is erect and is both terminal and axillary in position. The corolla is salverform in shape with partially fused lobes. The lobes of the corolla are medium in size with an entire margin that has medium undulation of the margin.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Lizzy' originated from a selection from a seed bed of hybrid Phlox paniculata seedlings that were produced from various crosses of unidentified Phlox seedling selections, in the Netherlands in 1995. The selection criteria were based on unique floral traits and its disease resistance.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Lizzy' were conducted in the summer of 2001 at Oxford Station, Ontario. The trials consisted of 10 plants of each variety, field planted in rows that were 1 metre apart with plants 0.40 metres apart within the row.
