Summary: 'Barten' is a perennial phlox variety which has shorter, bushier plants than 'Amethyst'. The cyme of 'Barten' is more dome shaped than the cyme of 'Amethyst' which is pyramid shaped. The two varieties also differ in floret colour.
Description:
'Barten' is a diploid, perennial phlox variety with an upright to bushy growth habit. The leaves are dark green, lanceolate in shape, with no pubescence on either the upper or lower side and no glandular stickiness. 'Barten' flowers mid-season and the flower cymes are single and dome shaped. The florets are round and purple coloured with a white eye zone.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Barten' originated as a seedling selection from a cross between two breeding lines made in Aalsmeer, the Netherlands in 1995. The selection criteria were plant height and suitability for potting production.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Barten' were conducted in the summer of 2000 at Genesis Plant Propagation Ltd., Langley, British Columbia. The trials consisted of 9 plants per variety, grown in 25 cm pots. They were planted April 15th and pinched May 15th. The plants were grown in a cold frame until June 15th and then were placed outdoors. No spray application was applied.
