Summary: 'Barfourteen' is a perennial phlox variety which has shorter, more compact plants than 'Lilac Time'. The florets of 'Barfourteen' are smaller in diameter and differ in colour from those of the reference variety.
Description:
'Barfourteen' is a diploid, perennial phlox variety with an upright bushy growth habit. The leaves are dark green, lanceolate in shape, with no pubescence on either the upper or lower side and no glandular stickiness. 'Barfourteen' flowers mid-season and the flower cymes are single and pyramid shaped. The florets are round and purple with a small, red-purple eye zone.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Barfourteen' originated as a seedling selection from a cross between two breeding lines made in Aalsmeer, the Netherlands in 1995. The selection criteria were compact, dwarf growth habit and suitability for potting production.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Barfourteen' were conducted in the summer of 2000 at Genesis Plant Propagation Ltd., Langley, British Columbia. The trials consisted of 12 plants per variety, grown in 25 cm pots. They were planted April 15, 2000 and pinched May 15, 2000. The plants were grown in a cold frame until June 15, 2000 and then were placed outdoors. No spray application was applied.
