Origin & Breeding History: 'Cloudburst' originated from a cross between 'Ditomsur', as the female parent, and a proprietary selection of Phlox latifolia, as the male parent, conducted in early summer of 2011, in Zeeland, Michigan, USA. The resulting seeds were collected and sown in 2011, in Zeeland, Michigan. The new variety was selected in the summer of 2013 based on foliage colour, disease resistance, plant habit and flower colour. 'Cloudburst' was first asexually reproduced by shoot tip cuttings in the summer of 2013.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Cloudburst' was conducted outdoors under a shade cloth during the summer of 2019 at Variety Rights Management, in Oxford Station, Ontario. There were 20 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. Dormant bare-root divisions were transplanted into 22 cm pots and spaced 45 cm apart. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticulture Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
