Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Fismille'

Summary: 'Fisolymp' differs from the reference variety, 'Fismille' in plant height, bract length and maturity. The plants and bracts of 'Fisolymp' are shorter than those of 'Fismille'. 'Fisolymp' matures later than 'Fismille' in that it has fewer uniformly coloured bracts than 'Fismille'.

Description:

'Fisolymp' has very weak to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration on the main stem and medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration on the upper branches. The leaves are broad ovate with a straight base, and no anthocyanin colouration on the upper and lower leaf surfaces. There is weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration along the midrib on the upper and lower surfaces of the leaf blade. Lobe development is weak with rounded sinuses between the lobes. Anthocyanin colouration on the upper side of the petiole is strong whereas it is medium to strong on the lower side of the petiole.

The bracts of 'Fisolymp' are uniformly coloured with weak intensity of rugosity between the veins, weak to medium folding and very weak to weak undulation of the margins. The bracts are ovate in shape with a wedge-shaped base, and have no lobe development. The glands of the cyathium are orange and large.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Fisolymp' originated from an induced mutation of the variety 'Fismille'. Irradiation of young plants of 'Fismille' took place in Ahrensburg, Germany in May 1998. Treated plants were grown in Hillscheid, Germany, propagated by cutting and screened for positive mutations. One plant, identified as number 373-1 was selected for darker bract colour. Following vegetative propagation, the variety was examined during the fall growing seasons of 2000 and 2001.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Fisolymp' were conducted at Westcan Greenhouses Ltd., Langley, British Columbia in November/December of 2002. The trial consisted of a minimum of 15 plants of each variety grown in a greenhouse. The 15 cm pots were spaced approximately 40 cm (from center) apart. Unless otherwise indicated, measured characteristics were based on ten measurements.
