Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Winter Rose Dark Red'

Summary: The leaves of 'PER1072' are wider with longer petioles than the leaves of 'Winter Rose Dark Red'. The cymes of 'PER1072' are wider with medium to large, orange glands whereas the cyathia of 'Winter Rose Dark Red' are narrower with small, greenish yellow glands. The first three cyathia of 'PER1072' open early whereas they open late in 'Winter Rose Dark Red'.

Description:

'PER1072' is an early-season poinsettia variety with weak anthocyanin colouration on the stem. The leaves are broad ovate in shape and have a rounded base with no anthocyanin colouration on the upper and lower sides or along the veins. Lobe development on the leaf blades is weak to medium with rounded to pointed sinuses between the lobes. The petiole has very strong anthocyanin colouration on the upper side and medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration on the lower side.

The bracts of 'PER1072' are red and develop their colour early in the season. Lobe development of the bracts is absent or very weak with no incisions of the margin. Bract folding, curving and twisting is present with strong intensity of rugosity between the veins. 'PER1072' has broad ovate shaped bracts with a rounded base. The glands of the cyathium are orange and medium to large, with medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the margins of the glands. Opening of the first three cyathia is early.

Origin & Breeding History: 'PER1072' was discovered at the Paul Ecke Ranch in Encinitas, California in December, 2000. It was selected for its early blooming, dark red reflexed bracts and reflexed dark green foliage.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'PER1072' were conducted in a greenhouse during the late fall of 2004 in Grimsby, Ontario. The trial consisted of 15 plant/variety grown in 15 cm pots, spaced approximately 0.40 metres apart on the bench. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety. All colour determinations were made using the RHS Colour Chart 1995.
