Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Yukon Gold' and 'Estima'

Summary: 'Provento' has a more erect growth habit than 'Estima'. The terminal leaflet of 'Provento' has a wavier margin than the reference varieties. 'Provento' has a higher number of secondary and tertiary leaflets than 'Estima'. The flowers of 'Provento' are white in colour while 'Yukon Gold' has red-violet flowers. 'Provento' has shorter, narrower tubers than 'Estima'. 'Provento' has medium anthocyanin on the light sprout base and weak anthocyanin on the tip while 'Yukon Gold' has no anthocyanin.

Description:

'Provento' is a late maturing potato variety. It has an erect growth habit and produces a stem type plant which is tall in height. The stems are medium in thickness and have weak anthocyanin colouration. Stem wings are moderately prominent and straight single. The stem nodes have medium swelling and no anthocyanin. 'Provento' produces a low number of branches.

The leaves of 'Provento' are medium green in colour and have medium pubescence on the lower surface. The leaf silhouette is medium. The leaf rachis has no anthocyanin on the top or bottom. The rachis has medium pubescence on the top and no pubescence on the bottom. The petioles have no anthocyanin and the stipules are medium in size. The terminal leaflets are medium ovate in shape with acute shaped tips and obtuse shaped, moderately asymmetrical bases. The margins of the terminal leaflets have strong waviness. 'Provento' has six pairs of primary leaflets which are medium in size. They are narrowly ovate in shape with acute shaped tips and obtuse to cordate shaped, moderately asymmetrical bases.

'Provento' produces a high number of inflorescences per plant and a medium number of florets per inflorescence. The flower buds have weak anthocyanin and are persistent. When fully expanded, the flowers are white in colour. There is no anthocyanin on the inner and outer side of the corolla. The corolla is medium in size with a moderately prominent star. The calyx has weak anthocyanin and the peduncle has no anthocyanin colouration. The anthers are orange in colour when the flower is fully expanded and are arranged in a narrow cone shape. The stigma is capitate and medium green in colour.

The tubers of 'Provento' have yellow coloured skin with no secondary colour. Skin texture is rough and tuber shape is round. Tuber eyes are intermediate in depth, few in number and predominantly apical in distribution. The eyebrows are slightly prominent. The tuber flesh is light yellow in colour with no secondary colour. 'Provento' produces a high number of tubers per plant.

The light sprout of 'Provento' is ovoid in shape with medium pubescence and medium, red-violet anthocyanin colouration at the base. The light sprout tip habit is moderate between closed and open. The tip has weak pubescence and weak, red-violet anthocyanin. The light sprout has a low frequency of root initials and medium protrusion of lenticels. The lateral shoots on the light sprout are short in length.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Provento' originated from a cross between 'Elvira' and 'Escort', made in Lelystad, The Netherlands in 1981. 'Elvira' is a selection of the cross 'Clivia' x 6430/1020 and 'Escort' is a selection of the cross 'Rental' x CB 64197-16.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Provento' were conducted at Grand Falls, New Brunswick in 2000. A randomized block design was used with four replicates per variety. All entries were planted in single-row plots which were 5.5 metres long. Spacing between adjacent plots was 91 cm and spacing between adjacent hills within the plot was 30.5 cm.
