Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'Russet Burbank' and 'Ranger Russet'
Summary: 'AC Stampede Russet' is a potato variety with more erect plants and more anthocyanin colouration on the stem, in the nodes and on the petiole than the reference varieties 'Russet Burbank' and 'Ranger Russet'. The terminal and primary leaflets of 'AC Stampede Russet' are broadly ovate, whereas they are medium ovate in 'Russet Burbank' and narrowly ovate in 'Ranger Russet'. The tuber of 'AC Stampede Russet' is oblong while the two reference varieties have long tubers. The base of the light sprout of 'AC Stampede Russet' is blue-violet, whereas it is green in 'Russet Burbank' and red-violet in 'Ranger Russet'.
Description:
'AC Stampede Russet' is a late maturing potato variety which produces indeterminate, erect plants of medium height. The stems are medium thick with prominent, straight single wings and a moderate amount of anthocyanin colouration. There is no swelling at the nodes and no branching. The leaves of 'AC Stampede Russet' are medium green and pubescent, with an open silhouette. The leaf rachis has moderate anthocyanin colouration on top and bottom and is pubescent. Anthocyanin intensity on the petioles is strong. The stipules are medium in size and the terminal leaflet is broadly ovate, with weak waviness of the margin, an acuminate tip and asymmetrical, cordate base. There are an average of four pairs of primary leaflets, which are medium sized and broadly ovate with an acuminate tip and asymmetrical, cordate base. There are 3 to 5 secondary and tertiary leaflets.
'AC Stampede Russet' produces a moderate number of inflorescences per plant with a high number of florets per inflorescence. The flower bud persists and has a high intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The inner surface of the corolla is blue-violet. Anthocyanin colouration is of medium intensity on the inner side and is present on the outer side of the corolla. The corolla of 'AC Stampede Russet' is medium sized with a very prominent star. Anthocyanin colouration on the peduncle is medium. 'AC Stampede Russet' has bright yellow anthers which are narrow cone-shaped. There is abundant, fertile pollen. The stigma is capitate in shape and dark green. Berry production is moderate.
'AC Stampede Russet' produces brown, oblong tubers with russetted skin and white flesh. There are a medium number of shallow eyes which are evenly distributed over the tuber. Eyebrows are not prominent. There are a medium number of tubers produced per plant and tuber dormancy is moderate (approximately 6 months). The light sprouts of 'AC Stampede Russet' are spherical with weak blue-violet anthocyanin colouration and moderate pubescence at the base. The light sprout tip is green, closed and moderately pubescent with no anthocyanin. The root initials are medium in number, the lateral shoots are short and the protrusion of lenticels is medium.
'AC Stampede Russet' is resistant to verticillium wilt (Verticillium species) and Fusarium dry rot. The variety is moderately resistant to bacterial ring rot (tuber reaction), early blight (Alternaria species) and common scab (Streptomyces scabies). 'AC Stampede Russet' is susceptible to bacterial ring rot (foliage reaction), and late blight (Phytophthora infestans).
'AC Stampede Russet' has a moist baking texture and mealy boiling texture. There is no discolouration after cooking. Boiling sloughing is moderate.
Origin & Breeding History: 'AC Stampede Russet' originated from a breeding population selected out of a second field generation population at the United States Department of Agriculture, Aberdeen Research Station in 1982. The original cross was made by the potato breeding program at Texas A&M University. The parent varieties were 'Lemhi Russet' and 'BR7091-1'. The clone is adapted to irrigated regions of western Canada. Selection criteria were tuber yield, size and shape uniformity, french fry quality and resistance to verticillium wilt and fusarium dry rot.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'AC Stampede Russet' were conducted in 1998 at Vauxhall, Alberta. The varieties were planted in rows 30 metres long with 90 cm between the rows and the plants were spaced 30 cm apart within the row. Measured characteristics were based on 50 measurements.
