Variety Description

Summary: 'IdaRose' has no anthocyanin in the stem while the reference varieties have medium anthocyanin. 'IdaRose' has a more open leaf silhouette than the reference varieties and has five pairs of primary leaflets while the reference varieties have six pairs. 'IdaRose' has a broad cylindrical shaped light sprout while 'Chieftain' has an ovoid light sprout. 'IdaRose' has a more closed light sprout tip which has less pubescence than the light sprout tips of the reference varieties.

Description:

'IdaRose' has an erect growth habit and produces a leaf type plant of medium height. The stems are thick and have no anthocyanin colouration. Stem wings are very prominent and straight double. The stem nodes have no swelling and no anthocyanin. 'IdaRose' produces a very high number of branches.

The leaves of 'IdaRose' are dark green in colour and have weak to medium pubescence on the lower surface. The leaf silhouette is open. The leaf rachis has weak anthocyanin on the top and no anthocyanin on the bottom. The rachis has medium pubescence on the top and no pubescence on the bottom. The petioles have weak anthocyanin and the stipules are medium in size. The terminal leaflets are medium ovate in shape with acute to acuminate shaped tips and obtuse to cordate shaped, slightly asymmetrical bases. The margins of the terminal leaflets have weak waviness. 'IdaRose' has five pairs of primary leaflets which are large in size. They are narrowly ovate in shape with acute shaped tips and obtuse to cordate shaped, strongly asymmetrical bases.

'IdaRose' produces a low number of inflorescences per plant and a medium number of florets per inflorescence. The flower buds have no anthocyanin and are persistent. When fully expanded, the flowers are red-violet in colour. There is medium to strong anthocyanin on the inner side of the corolla and anthocyanin present on the outer side. The corolla is medium in size with a moderately prominent star. The calyx has no anthocyanin and the peduncle has weak anthocyanin colouration. The anthers are bright yellow in colour when the flower is fully expanded and are arranged in a narrow shaped cone. The stigma is capitate and medium green in colour.

The tubers of 'IdaRose' have red coloured skin with no secondary colour. Skin texture is smooth and tuber shape is round. Tuber eyes are shallow to intermediate in depth, intermediate in number and predominantly apical in distribution. The eyebrows are very slightly prominent. The tuber flesh is white in colour with no secondary colour. 'IdaRose' produces a low number of tubers per plant.

The light sprout of 'IdaRose' is broad cylindrical in shape with medium pubescence and strong, red-violet anthocyanin colouration at the base. The light sprout tip habit is closed. The tip has weak pubescence and strong, red-violet anthocyanin. The light sprout has a high frequency of root initials and medium protrusion of lenticels. The lateral shoots on the light sprout are long in length.

Origin & Breeding History: 'IdaRose' originated from a cross between 'Sangre' and TXA218-7, made at The University of Idaho's Aberdeen Research and Extension Center in April of 1982. 'IdaRose' was selected out of an F1 population using the selection criteria; appearance, specific gravity, culinary quality, ability to maintain skin colour in storage and disease resistance.'IdaRose' originated from a cross between 'Sangre' and TXA218-7, made at The University of Idaho's Aberdeen Research and Extension Center in April of 1982. Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'IdaRose' were conducted at Grand Falls, New Brunswick in 2000. A randomized block design was used with four replicates per variety. All entries were planted in single-row plots which were 5.5 metres long. Spacing between adjacent plots was 91 cm and spacing between adjacent hills within the plot was 30.5 cm.
