Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'Sante' and 'Provento'
Summary: 'Sinora' has a more spreading growth habit than the reference varieties and a taller plant height than 'Sante'. 'Sinora' has stronger anthocyanin in the stem than the reference varieties. 'Sinora' has strong anthocyanin in the flower bud while 'Provento' has no anthocyanin. 'Sinora' has a larger light sprout with stronger, bluish anthocyanin at the base and tip than the reference varieties.
Description:
'Sinora' has a spreading growth habit and produces an intermediate type plant. The stems are medium in thickness and have strong anthocyanin colouration which is located on the upper part of the stem. The nodes have low swelling.
'Sinora' has medium green leaves and an intermediate leaf silhouette. The leaf rachis has no anthocyanin on the upper side and petiole has weak to medium anthocyanin colouration. The terminal leaflet is medium ovate in shape with an acute to acuminate shaped tip and obtuse to cordate shaped base. The terminal and lateral leaflets have a low to medium frequency of coalescence. The lateral leaflets are medium in size and are narrowly ovate in shape with an acute to acuminate shaped tip and cordate shaped base. The leaf veins are shallow to medium in depth. The terminal and lateral leaflets have absent or very weak waviness of the margin and have medium glossiness of the upper surface. The leaf blades have weak pubescence at the apical rosette. The presence of secondary leaflets is medium to strong.
'Sinora' has a high flowering profusion and a medium inflorescence size. The flower buds are strongly persistent and have strong anthocyanin colouration. The corolla is white in colour, small in size and has a moderately prominent star. The peduncle has weak anthocyanin colouration.
The tubers have yellow skin with yellow colour at the base of the eye. The skin develops strong anthocyanin colouration when exposed to light. The skin texture is smooth and the tubers are round in shape. The tuber eyes are intermediate in depth and are evenly distributed. The tuber eyebrows are slightly prominent. The tuber flesh is medium yellow in colour with no secondary colour present.
'Sinora' has a large light sprout which is conical in shape. The light sprout base has very strong anthocyanin with a high proportion of blue. The base has medium pubescence. The tip of the light sprout is smaller in size in relation to the base. The tip has a closed habit and has strong anthocyanin colouration. The tip has dense pubescence. There are a medium number of root tips and the lateral roots are short to medium in length.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Sinora' originated from a cross between 'Agria' and 'AM 70-2166', made in The Netherlands in 1984.
Tests & Trials: Trials for 'Sinora' were conducted in North Tilley, New Brunswick in 2004. A randomized block design was used with four replicates per variety. All entries were planted in single-row plots and each entry had one replicate per block. Plots consisted of rows 5.5 meters long and between row spacing of 91 cm. Measured characteristics were based on 10 measurements. Colour determinations were made using the RHS colour chart.
