Summary: 'FL 1922' has a spreading growth habit, whereas the 'Snowden' and 'Atlantic' both have semi-erect plants. 'FL 1922' has anthocyanin colouration on the stems and at the nodes, while the reference varieties do not. The flowers of 'FL 1922' are deep blue-violet with very strong anthocyanin. 'Snowden' has white flowers and 'Atlantic' has pale blue-violet flowers with significantly less intense anthocyanin colouration. The light sprout tip of 'FL 1922' is blue-violet, whereas it is green for both reference varieties.

Description:

'FL 1922' has a spreading growth habit and produces an intermediate type plant which is short in height. The stem has weak anthocyanin colouration and is medium in thickness. The stem wings are conspicuous and straight single. The stem nodes have no swelling and have weak anthocyanin colouration. 'FL 1922' produces many branches.

'FL 1922' has medium green leaves with pubescence on the lower surface. The leaf silhouette is medium. The leaf rachis has weak anthocyanin colouration. There is pubescence on the top and bottom of the leaf rachis. The petiole has medium anthocyanin and the stipules are medium in size. The terminal leaflet is medium ovate in shape with an acuminate shaped tip and truncate base which is asymmetrical. The margin has weak waviness. On average, there are three pairs of primary leaflets which are medium in size. The primary leaflets are medium ovate in shape with an acuminate shaped tip and asymmetrical, truncate base. There are one to four secondary and tertiary leaflets.

'FL 1922' has a high flowering profusion and produces a medium number of florets per inflorescence. The flower bud has no anthocyanin colouration and the buds are persistent. The flowers are blue-violet in colour with strong anthocyanin colouration on the inner side and anthocyanin present on the outer side. The corolla is large in size with a very prominent star. The calyx and peduncle have no anthocyanin. The anthers are orange and arranged in a broad cone shape. The stigma is capitate in shape and dark green in colour. Berry production is low.

The tuber of 'FL 1922' has buff coloured skin with blue-violet pigmentation in the eyes. The skin texture is rough and flaky and the tuber shape is oval. The tuber eyes are medium in depth, intermediate in number and are evenly distributed. The tuber eyebrows are not prominent. The flesh is white in colour with no secondary colour. There are a medium number of tubers per plant.

The light sprout is ovoid in shape. The base has medium pubescence and very strong, blue-violet anthocyanin colouration. The tip habit is closed. The tip has medium pubescence and is blue-violet, with strong anthocyanin colouration. There are a medium number of light sprout root initials and the protrusion of lenticels is moderate. The lateral shoots are short.

Origin & Breeding History: 'FL 1922' originated from a cross made in 1988 between the varieties 'FL 1533' and 'FL 1207'. The cross took place at the Frito-Lay Research facility near Rhinelander, Wisconsin. Seeds from the cross were sown in the greenhouse in the summer of 1988 and the resulting tubers were harvested in the late fall of that year. Seedling tubers were planted in the field in the spring of 1989. One of the selections from this progeny was given the designation RD 84-89-13. This selection was tested for four years in the field near Rhinelander, and found to have excellent chip appearance, with good flavour and resistance to common scab. In 1995 RD-84-89-13 was renamed 'FL 1922'.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'FL 1922' were conducted at Vauxhall, Alberta in 2003. The trials consisted of 30 metre rows of each variety. The plants within each row were planted 30cm apart, and the spacing between the rows was 90cm. Measured characteristics were based on 50 measurements.
