Summary: 'Ivory Crisp' has a more spreading growth habit than the reference varieties and has a stem plant type while the reference varieties have leaf type plants. 'Ivory Crisp' has fewer secondary and tertiary leaflets than 'Atlantic' and smaller stipules than the reference varieties. 'Ivory Crisp' produces more flowers than 'Snowden' and has white flowers while 'Atlantic' has red-violet flowers. 'Ivory Crisp' has broad cylindrical shaped light sprouts while the reference varieties have spherical shaped light sprouts. 'Ivory Crisp' has stronger anthocyanin on the light sprout base than 'Snowden'. 'Ivory Crisp' has weaker pubescence on the light sprout tip than the reference varieties.

Description:

'Ivory Crisp' has a spreading growth habit and produces a stem type plant which is medium in height. The stem has absent to weak anthocyanin colouration and is thin. The stem wings are prominent and waved single. The stem nodes have slight swelling and no anthocyanin colouration. 'Ivory Crisp' produces a high number of branches.

'Ivory Crisp' has yellowish green leaves with weak pubescence on the lower surface. The leaf silhouette is medium. The leaf rachis has no anthocyanin colouration and has very weak pubescence on the top and no pubescence on the bottom. The petiole has no anthocyanin and the stipules are small in size. The terminal leaflet is medium to broadly ovate in shape with an acute to acuminate shaped tip and cordate shaped base which is very slightly asymmetrical. The margin has absent to weak waviness. There are four pairs of primary leaflets which are small to medium in size. The primary leaflets are narrow ovate in shape with an acute to acuminate shaped tip and asymmetrical, cordate shaped base.

'Ivory Crisp' has a very high flowering profusion and produces a high number of florets per inflorescence. The flower bud has absent to weak anthocyanin colouration and the buds are persistent. The flowers are white in colour with no anthocyanin colouration on the inner side and outer side. The corolla is medium in size with a prominent star. The calyx has weak anthocyanin and the peduncle has no anthocyanin colouration. The anthers are bright yellow in colour and arranged in a broad cone shape. The stigma is capitate in shape and medium green in colour.

The tuber has buff skin with no secondary colour. The skin texture is rough and the tuber shape is round. The tuber eyes are intermediate in depth, few in number and predominantly apical to evenly distributed. The tuber eyebrows are slightly prominent. The flesh is cream in colour with no secondary colour. There are a medium number of tubers per plant.

The light sprout is broad cylindrical in shape. The base has strong pubescence and strong, red-violet anthocyanin colouration. The tip habit is closed. The tip has weak pubescence and no anthocyanin to weak, red-violet anthocyanin. There are a low number of light sprout root initials and the protrusion of lenticels is weak. The length of the lateral shoots is medium.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Ivory Crisp' originated from a cross between ND292-1 and A77268-4, made at North Dakota State University in 1980. It was shipped to Oregon State University as an unselected seedling in 1984 where it went through four years of selection and evaluation. In 1988, 'Ivory Crisp' was tested in Idaho as part of the Western Regional Variety Trial. 'Ivory Crisp' was originally maintained under the breeding designation ND01496-1. Selection criteria included appearance, yield, specific gravity, chip quality and resistance to common field diseases.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Ivory Crisp' were conducted near Grand Falls, New Brunswick in 2002. A randomized block design was used with four replicates per variety. All entries were planted in single-row plots which were 5.7 metres long. Spacing between adjacent plots was 91 cm and spacing between plants was 30.5 cm. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements.
