Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Bintje' and 'Yukon Gold'

Summary: 'Inova' has a semi-erect plant growth habit, whereas 'Bintje' and 'Yukon Gold' have erect plants. The terminal leaflet and primary leaflets of 'Inova' are broadly ovate, while the leaflets of 'Bintje' are medium ovate and 'Yukon Gold' has narrowly ovate leaflets. 'Inova' does not produce flowers, whereas the references are flowering varieties. 'Inova' has oblong shaped tubers. 'Bintje' and 'Yukon Gold' both have oval tubers.

Description:

'Inova' has a semi-erect growth habit and produces an intermediate type plant which is medium in height. The stem has no anthocyanin colouration and is medium in thickness. The stem wings are conspicuous and straight single. The stem nodes have slight swelling and have no anthocyanin colouration. 'Inova' produces many branches.

'Inova' has medium green leaves with pubescence on the lower surface. The leaf silhouette is closed. The leaf rachis has no anthocyanin colouration. There is pubescence on the top and bottom of the leaf rachis. The petiole has no anthocyanin and the stipules are medium in size. The terminal leaflet is broadly ovate in shape with an acuminate shaped tip and truncate base which is symmetrical. The margin has weak waviness. There are four pairs of primary leaflets which are medium in size. The primary leaflets are broadly ovate in shape with an acuminate shaped tip and asymmetrical, cordate base. 'Inova' is a non-flowering potato variety.

The tuber has yellow skin with no secondary colour. The skin texture is smooth and the tuber shape is oblong. The tuber eyes are shallow in depth, medium in number and are evenly distributed. The tuber eyebrows are not prominent. The flesh is medium yellow with no secondary colour. There are a medium number of tubers per plant.

The light sprout is spherical in shape. The base has strong pubescence and very strong, blue-violet anthocyanin colouration. The tip habit is medium. The tip has strong pubescence and is green, with no anthocyanin colouration. There are a high number of light sprout root initials and the protrusion of lenticels is moderate. The lateral shoots are short.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Inova' originated from a cross between the varieties 'Nicola' and 'Impala' which was made in 1987 at the applicant's breeding station in Emmeloord, The Netherlands. The variety 'Nicola' originated from the cross Clivia x 6439/1011. 'Impala' originated from the cross BM52-72 x Biranco. The selection criteria used in the development of 'Inova' were earliness, boiling quality, storability, shelf life and tolerance to bruising and damage.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Inova' were conducted at Vauxhall, Alberta in 2003. The trials consisted of 30 metre rows of each variety. The plants within each row were planted 30cm apart, and the spacing between the rows was 90cm. Measured characteristics were based on 50 measurements.
