Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Atlantic', 'Kennebec' and 'Niska'

Summary: 'Peribonka' produces erect plants, whereas the reference varieties have semi-erect growth habit. The plants of 'Peribonka' are stem types while those of the reference varieties are intermediate between stem and leaf types. 'Peribonka' has more anthocyanin colouration of the stem and nodes than the reference varieties. The primary leaflets of 'Peribonka' are narrow ovate while those of the reference varieties are broad ovate. Flower colour for 'Peribonka' is white while it is violet for 'Atlantic'. Predominant tuber skin colour for 'Peribonka' is brown while it is white for 'Kennebec' and 'Niska'. 'Peribonka' has long shaped tubers while those of 'Atlantic' are round, those of 'Kennebec' are oblong and those of 'Niska' are compressed. The light sprout of 'Peribonka' is broad cylindrical in shape while 'Atlantic' has an ovoid shaped light sprout and 'Kennebec' and 'Niska' have conical shaped light sprouts. Anthocyanin colouration at the base of the light sprout is moderate for 'Peribonka', absent for 'Atlantic' and 'Kennebec' and weak for 'Niska'.

Description:

'Peribonka' is a table and french fry potato variety which has an erect growth habit. It produces a stem type plant which is medium in height and matures early to mid-season. The stem is medium to thick and has moderate intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The stem wings are prominent and wavy single type. The stem nodes are slightly swollen and have weak to moderate intensity of anthocyanin colouration. 'Peribonka' produces a medium number of branches.

'Peribonka' has olive green leaves with weak pubescence on the lower surface. The leaf silhouette is more open than closed. There is no anthocyanin colouration at the apex of the leaf rachis and weak intensity of anthocyanin at the base. There is moderate pubescence at the apex of the leaf rachis and sparse pubescence at the base. The petiole has no anthocyanin colouration and the stipules are small to medium in size. The terminal leaflet is medium ovate in shape with an acuminate shaped tip and truncate shaped, asymmetrical base. The margin of the terminal leaflet has moderate to strong waviness. On average, there are three pairs of primary leaflets which are large in size. The primary leaflets are narrow ovate in shape with an acuminate shaped tip and asymmetrical, truncate shaped base. On average, there are fourteen secondary and tertiary leaflets.

'Peribonka' has weak to moderate flowering profusion and produces a medium number of florets per inflorescence. The flower bud has strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration and the buds are more persistent than not. The flowers are greenish white in colour on the inner side of the corolla. There is no anthocyanin colouration present on the inner and outer sides of the corolla. The corolla is medium in size with a moderately prominent star. The calyx has moderate to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration and the peduncle has none. The anthers are bright yellow in colour and arranged in a broad cone shape. The stigma is capitate in shape and medium green in colour.

The tuber has predominantly brown coloured skin with no secondary colour. The skin texture is netted and the tuber shape is long. The tuber eyes are very shallow, intermediate in number and evenly distributed. The tuber eyebrows are slightly prominent. The flesh of the tubers is white with no secondary colour. There are a medium number of tubers per plant. Dormancy of the tubers is moderate to long. The light sprout is broad cylindrical in shape. The base of the light sprout has weak pubescence and moderate intensity of red violet anthocyanin colouration. The habit of the light sprout tip is closed. The tip is red violet in colour with moderate pubescence and weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration. There are a medium number of light sprout root initials and the protrusion of the lenticels is moderate. The lateral shoots are short.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Peribonka' (experimental designation QP90085.10) originated from a cross between the female parent 'TATA9192-15', a clone from the genetic improvement program in Fredericton, New Brunswick which specializes in interspecies crosses of Solanum andigenum Juz. & Bukasov and Solanum tuberosum L., and the male parent 'A7961-1', a clone from the genetic improvement program at the University of Idaho, U.S.A. with long tubers, white tuber skin and resistance to verticilium. The cross took place at le Centre de recherche Les Buissons inc., Pointe-aux-Outardes, Québec in 1990. Criteria used by the breeder, Dr. Pierre Turcotte, in the selection of 'Peribonka' were appearance, tuber size and shape, tuber skin colour and texture, colour of tuber flesh, depth of tuber eyes, yield, yield stability, specific gravity, tolerance to common scab, late blight and rhizoctonia, aptitude for boiling, chipping and frying, and length of tuber dormancy.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Peribonka' were conducted at Pointe-aux-Outardes, Québec during the summer of 2003. The trial consisted of one 12.5 metre long row for the candidate variety and each reference variety. The potatoes within each row were planted 25 cm apart, center to center, and the spacing between the rows was 1 metre.
