Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'Russet Burbank', 'Russet Norkotah' and 'Silverton Russet'
Summary: 'Keystone Russet' has a more upright growth habit than 'Russet Burbank' and 'Russet Norkotah'. 'Keystone Russet' has a shorter plant height than the reference varieties. 'Keystone Russet' has an absent to low frequency of coalescence of the terminal and lateral leaflets while 'Silverton Russet' has a high frequency of coalescence. 'Keystone Russet' has a larger light sprout than 'Russet Burbank' and 'Russet Norkotah'. The light sprout is broad cylindrical in shape for 'Keystone Russet', ovoid for 'Russet Burbank' and 'Russet Norkotah' and conical for 'Silverton Russet'. 'Keystone Russet' has medium to strong anthocyanin in the light sprout base while 'Silverton Russet' has no anthocyanin.
Description:
'Keystone Russet' has an upright growth habit with an intermediate type foliage structure. The stem has weak to medium anthocyanin colouration which is located on the lower half. The stems are medium in thickness and the nodes have low swelling.
The leaves are medium green in colour and the leaf silhouette is intermediate. The leaf rachis and petiole have no anthocyanin colouration. The terminal leaflet is narrowly ovate in shape with an acuminate shaped tip and cordate base. There is an absent or low frequency of coalescence of the terminal and lateral leaflets. The lateral leaflets are medium in size and are narrowly ovate in shape with an acute to acuminate shaped tip and cordate base. The veins on the leaflets are medium in depth and the margins have weak waviness. The leaflets are dull in glossiness and the leaf blades have sparse pubescence at the apical rosette. The presence of secondary leaflets is medium.
'Keystone Russet' has a medium flowering profusion and a medium inflorescence size. The flower buds are persistent and have medium anthocyanin colouration. The corolla is white in colour, large in size and has a prominent star. The peduncle has no anthocyanin colouration.
The tubers have light beige skin with yellow colour at the base of the eye. The skin develops medium anthocyanin colouration when exposed to light. The skin texture is russetted and the tubers are oblong in shape. The tuber eyes are medium in depth and are evenly distributed. The tuber eyebrows are moderately prominent. The tuber flesh is white in colour with no secondary colour present.
'Keystone Russet' has a large light sprout which is broad cylindrical in shape. The light sprout base has medium to strong anthocyanin with an absent to low proportion of blue. The base has sparse pubescence. The tip of the light sprout is equal in size to the base. The tip has a closed habit and has absent or very weak anthocyanin colouration. The tip has sparse pubescence. There are a medium number of root tips and the lateral roots are short in length.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Keystone Russet' originated from a cross between 'Calwhite' and 'A7875-5', made by the USDA-ARS at the University of Idaho Research Extension Center, Aberdeen, Idaho in 1983. 'Keystone Russet' was tested under the experimental designation AC83064-1 in the Western Regional Trials in 1993 - 1995. These trials were conducted in several locations around the Western United States as part of Western Coordinating Committee-27 for potato variety development. 'Keystone Russet' was selected out of an F1 population using healthy strong vine type, good vigor, tuber shape, tuber colour, tuber quality and lack of defects as selection criteria.
Tests & Trials: Trials for 'Keystone Russet' were conducted in North Tilley, New Brunswick in 2004. A randomized block design was used with four replicates per variety. All entries were planted in single-row plots and each entry had one replicate per block. Plots consisted of rows 5.5 meters long and between row spacing of 91 cm. Measured characteristics were based on 10 measurements. Colour determinations were made using the RHS colour chart.
