Summary: The base of the lightsprout of 'Alexandra' has weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration whereas the base of the lightsprout of 'Belana' has strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The tip of the lightsprout of 'Alexandra' has absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration whereas the tip of the lightsprout of 'Belana' has medium intensity of the anthocyanin colouration. The plants of 'Alexandra' are taller than the plants of 'Belana'. The extent of anthocyanin colouration on the stem is absent or very low for 'Alexandra' whereas the extent of anthocyanin colouration on the stem is low for 'Belana'. The outline size of the leaf of 'Alexandra' is large whereas the outline size of the leaf of 'Belana' is medium size.

PLANT: foliage structure is leaf type where foliage is closed and stems are not or hardly visible, semi-upright growth habit, late maturity

STEM: absent or very low extent of anthocyanin colouration

LEAF: large outline, intermediate between closed and open, light to medium green on upper side, absent or very low extent and absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of upper side of midrib, weak presence of secondary leaflets, low frequency of coalescence of terminal and lateral leaflets

Origin & Breeding History: 'Alexandra' originated from a cross conducted in 1999 between '165/22/65 B' and 'P 92/388', in Böhlendorf, Germany. 'Alexandra' was selected in 2000 for its positive agronomic characteristics.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Alexandra' was conducted by Global Agri Services Inc. during the growing season of 2016 in Drummond, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of a single, 19.5 metre long row containing 65 plants spaced 0.3 metres apart for each variety. The distance between rows within the trial was 0.9 metres. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
