Variety Description
Variety used for comparison: 'Adora'
Summary: The intensity of the anthocyanin colouration of the lightsprout of 'Actrice' is very strong on the entire lightsprout whereas the intensity of the anthocyanin colouration is medium to strong at the base and weak to medium at the tip for 'Adora'. The lightsprout of 'Actrice' has a medium number of root tips whereas 'Adora' has few root tips. The size of the tip of the lightsprout in relation to the base is small for 'Actrice' whereas it is medium for 'Adora'. The plant of 'Actrice' has an upright growth habit whereas that of 'Adora' has a semi-upright growth habit. The anthocyanin colouration on the stem of 'Actrice' is of medium extent whereas it is low for 'Adora'. On the upper side of the midrib of the leaf, the anthocyanin colouration for 'Actrice' is of high extent and medium intensity whereas the anthocyanin colouration is of low extent and weak intensity for 'Adora'. The glossiness of the upper side of the leaflet for 'Actrice' is medium while it is dull for 'Adora'. The plant of 'Actrice' is taller than that of 'Adora'. The extent of anthocyanin colouration on the peduncle is absent or very low for 'Actrice' whereas the extent is high for 'Adora'. On the inner side of the corolla, the anthocyanin colouration for 'Actrice' is of high extent with a medium proportion of blue whereas it is of medium extent with an absent or low proportion of blue for 'Adora'. The plant of 'Actrice' matures late whereas that of 'Adora' matures mid-season. The tuber of 'Actrice' has light yellow flesh whereas that of 'Adora' has cream coloured flesh.

Origin & Breeding History: The variety 'Actrice' originated from a cross made in 1999 between 'Denise' as the female parent and 'Agata' as the male parent in Langeloo, The Netherlands. Seed from the cross were sown in a greenhouse in 2000. The resulting tubers were harvested and planted in the field at Langeloo in the spring of 2001. One of the selected progeny was given the designation 'Actrice'. Selection criteria were negative mass selection for agronomic characteristics and resistance for various diseases.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Actrice' was conducted during the growing season of 2014 in Drummond, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of a single row with 60 plants spaced 0.3 metres apart for each variety. The distance between rows within the trial was 0.9 metres. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
