Origin & Breeding History: 'Crop 33' (breeder's designation '2765-5') originated from a planned breeding program of the New Zealand Institute for Plant and Food Research Limited in Christchurch, New Zealand. The cross was conducted in a greenhouse in 1990 between the breeding lines designated '1463-1', as the female parent, and 'Stage II blue', as the male parent. The seed from the cross was planted in February 1991 at the Crop and Food Research Lincoln and the resulting tubers were planted in the field in November 1991. The tubers went through 10 cycles of selection before 'Crop 33' was selected in 2002 for the colour of its tuber skin and tuber flesh.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Crop 33' was conducted during the growing season of 2015 in Drummond, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of a single, 18.5 metre long row containing 60 plants spaced 0.3 metres apart for each variety. The distance between rows within the trial was 0.9 metres. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
