Variety Description
Variety used for comparison: 'Milva'
Summary: The size of the lightsprout of 'Svenja' is small whereas the lightsprout of 'Milva' is medium to large. The intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the base of the lightsprout of 'Svenja' is medium whereas the intensity is very strong for 'Milva'. The proportion of blue in the anthocyanin colouration of the base of the lightsprout of 'Svenja' is absent or low whereas the proportion of blue is high for 'Milva'. The plants of 'Svenja' are taller with an upright growth habit whereas the plants of 'Milva' have a semi-upright growth habit. The distribution of the anthocyanin colouration of the stem of 'Svenja' is along the entire length whereas for 'Milva', the distribution is at the base of the stem only. The openness of the leaf of 'Svenja' is open whereas the leaf of 'Milva' is closed. The anthocyanin colouration on the inner side of the corolla of 'Svenja' is of medium extent and medium intensity whereas for 'Milva', the anthocyanin colouration is of absent or very low extent and absent or very weak intensity. The time of maturity of the plants of 'Svenja' is mid-season whereas the plants of 'Milva' mature late. In reaction to light, the tuber skin of 'Svenja' develops a very strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration whereas the tuber skin of 'Milva' develops a very weak to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration.
Description:
LIGHTSPROUT: small, spherical shape, medium number of root tips, short lateral shoots
LIGHTSPROUT BASE: medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration, absent or low proportion of blue in anthocyanin colouration, medium to dense pubescence
LIGHTSPROUT TIP: medium size in relation to base, closed habit, weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration, absent or very sparse pubescence
PLANT: foliage structure is intermediate type where foliage is half open and stems are partly visible, upright growth habit, mid-season maturity
STEM: low extent of anthocyanin colouration along entire length
LEAF: outline is medium to large, openness is open, light to medium green on upper side, low extent and weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration on upper side of midrib, medium presence of secondary leaflets, absent or very low frequency of coalescence of terminal and lateral leaflets
SECOND PAIR OF LATERAL LEAFLETS: medium size, leaflet ranges from narrower than long to as broad as long
LEAFLET: absent or very weak waviness of margin, medium depth of veins, dull to medium glossiness of upper side, pubescent blade at apical rosette
INFLORESCENCE: medium frequency per plant, medium to large size
PEDUNCLE: low extent of anthocyanin colouration
FLOWER BUD: low to medium extent of anthocyanin colouration
COROLLA: medium size
COROLLA (INNER SIDE): medium extent of anthocyanin colouration, medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration, absent or low proportion of blue in anthocyanin colouration
TUBER: oval to long oval shape, medium to dark yellow flesh
TUBER EYE: shallow, yellow at base
TUBER SKIN: yellow, develops very strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration in reaction to light
Origin & Breeding History: 'Svenja' originated from a cross conducted in 1998 between the selections designated 'B 160/25/93' and 'L 175/93/88'. It was selected in Böhlendorf, Western-Pomerania, Germany, in 2000 for its positive agronomic characteristics.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Svenja' was conducted during the growing season of 2015 in Drummond, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of a single, 18.5 metre long row containing 60 plants spaced 0.3 metres apart for each variety. The distance between rows within the trial was 0.9 metres. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
