Summary: The size of the lightsprout of 'Svenja' is small whereas the lightsprout of 'Milva' is medium to large. The intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the base of the lightsprout of 'Svenja' is medium whereas the intensity is very strong for 'Milva'. The proportion of blue in the anthocyanin colouration of the base of the lightsprout of 'Svenja' is absent or low whereas the proportion of blue is high for 'Milva'. The plants of 'Svenja' are taller with an upright growth habit whereas the plants of 'Milva' have a semi-upright growth habit. The distribution of the anthocyanin colouration of the stem of 'Svenja' is along the entire length whereas for 'Milva', the distribution is at the base of the stem only. The openness of the leaf of 'Svenja' is open whereas the leaf of 'Milva' is closed. The anthocyanin colouration on the inner side of the corolla of 'Svenja' is of medium extent and medium intensity whereas for 'Milva', the anthocyanin colouration is of absent or very low extent and absent or very weak intensity. The time of maturity of the plants of 'Svenja' is mid-season whereas the plants of 'Milva' mature late. In reaction to light, the tuber skin of 'Svenja' develops a very strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration whereas the tuber skin of 'Milva' develops a very weak to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Svenja' originated from a cross conducted in 1998 between the selections designated 'B 160/25/93' and 'L 175/93/88'. It was selected in Böhlendorf, Western-Pomerania, Germany, in 2000 for its positive agronomic characteristics.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Svenja' was conducted during the growing season of 2015 in Drummond, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of a single, 18.5 metre long row containing 60 plants spaced 0.3 metres apart for each variety. The distance between rows within the trial was 0.9 metres. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
