Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Anuschka'

Summary: The pubescence of the base of the lightsprout is sparse for 'Nandina' whereas the pubescence is dense for 'Anuschka'. The intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the tip of the lightsprout is weak for 'Nandina' whereas the intensity is medium to strong for 'Anuschka'. The pubescence of the tip of the lightsprout is dense for 'Nandina' whereas the pubescence is sparse to medium dense for 'Anuschka'. The distribution of anthocyanin colouration of the stem is at the base only for 'Nandina' whereas for 'Anuschka', the distribution is along the entire length of the stem. The extent of anthocyanin colouration on the upper side of the leaf midrib of 'Nandina' is absent or very low whereas the extent is high for 'Anuschka'. The frequency of coalescence of the terminal and lateral leaflets of 'Nandina' is absent or very low whereas the frequency of coalescence is medium for 'Anuschka'. The frequency of inflorescences per plant is low for 'Nandina' whereas the frequency of inflorescences is medium for 'Anuschka'.

Description:

LIGHTSPROUT: medium to large, ovoid shape, medium to many root tips, short to medium length lateral shoots
LIGHTSPROUT BASE: strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration, absent or low to medium proportion of blue in anthocyanin colouration, sparse pubescence
LIGHTSPROUT TIP: small to medium size in relation to base, intermediate to open habit, weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration, dense pubescence

PLANT: foliage structure is intermediate type where foliage is half open and stems are partly visible, semi-upright growth habit, early maturity

STEM: low extent of anthocyanin colouration at base only

LEAF: outline is medium to large, openness is intermediate to open, medium green on upper side, absent or very low extent and absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration on upper side of midrib, medium presence of secondary leaflets, absent or very low frequency of coalescence of terminal and lateral leaflets
SECOND PAIR OF LATERAL LEAFLETS: medium size, leaflet is narrower than long
LEAFLET: absent or very weak waviness of margin, shallow veins, medium glossiness of upper side, glabrous blade at apical rosette

INFLORESCENCE: low frequency per plant, small size
PEDUNCLE: low to medium extent of anthocyanin colouration
FLOWER BUD: low to medium extent of anthocyanin colouration
COROLLA: medium size
COROLLA (INNER SIDE): high extent of anthocyanin colouration, weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration, absent or low proportion of blue in anthocyanin colouration

TUBER: short oval shape, medium to dark yellow flesh
TUBER EYE: medium depth, yellow at base
TUBER SKIN: yellow, develops medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration in reaction to light

Origin & Breeding History: 'Nandina' originated from a cross conducted in 2000 between the selection designated 'B 160/4/93' and the variety 'Flavia'. It was selected in 2002 for its positive agronomic characteristics.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Nandina' was conducted during the growing season of 2015 in Drummond, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of a single, 18.5 metre long row containing 60 plants spaced 0.3 metres apart for each variety. The distance between rows within the trial was 0.9 metres. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
