Variety Description
Variety used for comparison: 'Agata'
Summary: The base of the lightsprout of 'Goldeye' has a very strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration and dense pubescence whereas the base of the lightsprout of 'Agata' has an absent or very weak to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration and medium density pubescence. The tip of the lightsprout of 'Goldeye' has a very strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration and sparse pubescence whereas the tip of the lightsprout of 'Agata' has a medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration and medium density pubescence. The anthocyanin colouration on the stem of 'Goldeye' is of medium extent and half way up the stem whereas it is absent for 'Agata'. The extent of anthocyanin colouration of the midrib on the upper side of the leaf of 'Goldeye' is weak whereas it is absent for 'Agata'. The leaflet from the second pair of lateral leaflets of 'Goldeye' is narrower than it is long whereas the leaflet of 'Agata' is as broad as it is long. The frequency of inflorescences per plant is low for 'Goldeye' whereas it is medium for 'Agata'. The extent of anthocyanin colouration of the peduncle is low to medium for 'Goldeye' whereas it is absent for 'Agata'.
Description:
LIGHTSPROUT: medium size, broad cylindrical shape, medium to many root tips, short lateral shoots
LIGHTSPROUT BASE: very strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration, medium to high proportion of blue in anthocyanin colouration, dense pubescence
LIGHTSPROUT TIP: small in relation to base, closed habit, very strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration, sparse pubescence
PLANT: foliage structure is leaf type where the foliage is closed and the stems are hardly visible, semi-upright growth habit, matures early
STEM: medium extent of anthocyanin colouration halfway up stem
LEAF: outline is medium size, openness is intermediate between closed and open, medium to dark green on upper side, low extent and absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration on midrib of upper side, weak to medium presence of secondary leaflets, absent or very low frequency of coalescence of terminal and lateral leaflets
SECOND PAIR OF LATERAL LEAFLETS: large, leaflet is narrower than long
LEAFLET: medium waviness of margin, medium depth of veins, medium to glossy upper side, glabrous blade at apical rosette
INFLORESCENCE: low frequency per plant, small
PEDUNCLE: low to medium extent of anthocyanin colouration
FLOWER BUD: absent or very low extent of anthocyanin colouration
COROLLA: medium size, absent or very low extent and absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration on inner side, absent or low proportion of blue in anthocyanin colouration on inner side
TUBER: oval shape, light yellow flesh
TUBER EYE: shallow depth, yellow at base
TUBER SKIN: yellow, develops weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration in reaction to light
Origin & Breeding History: The variety 'Goldeye' originated from a cross made in 2003 between 'Agria' as the female parent and 'Triplo' as the male parent at the Brunia's private breeding facility in Kraggenburg, The Netherlands. The resultant seed was planted in the greenhouse in Kraggenburg and from these, tubers were harvested and planted in the field during the spring of 2004. The variety was selected in 2004 for its agronomic characteristics and resistance to various diseases.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Goldeye' was conducted during the growing season of 2014 in Drummond, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of a single row with 60 plants spaced 0.3 metres apart for each variety. The distance between rows within the trial was 0.9 metres. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety.
