Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Rosara'

Summary: The lightsprout of 'Bordeaux' is large with many root tips and long lateral shoots whereas the lightsprout of 'Rosara' is small with few root tips and short lateral shoots. The pubescence at the base of the lightsprout is dense to very dense on 'Bordeaux' whereas it is sparse on 'Rosara'. The plant of 'Bordeaux' has an upright growth habit whereas that of 'Rosara' has a semi-upright growth habit. The extent of anthocyanin colouration along the entire stem of 'Bordeaux' is high to very high whereas it is low to medium for 'Rosara'. On the upper side of the midrib of the leaf, the anthocyanin colouration for 'Bordeaux' is of very high extent and very strong intensity whereas the anthocyanin colouration is of low extent and weak to medium intensity for 'Rosara'. The waviness of the leaflet margin for 'Bordeaux' is strong whereas it is weak for 'Rosara'. At the apical rosette, the leaflet blade of 'Bordeaux' is pubescent whereas the leaflet blade for 'Rosara' is glabrous. The extent of anthocyanin colouration of the flower bud is medium to high for 'Bordeaux' whereas it is low for 'Rosara'. The plant of 'Bordeaux' is taller than that of 'Rosara'. The frequency of inflorescences per plant is medium for 'Bordeaux' whereas it is low for 'Rosara'. The extent of anthocyanin colouration on the peduncle is medium to high for 'Bordeaux' whereas the extent is low for 'Rosara'. The tuber of 'Bordeaux' is round to short oval in shape whereas the tuber of 'Rosara' is oval to long oval in shape.

Origin & Breeding History: The variety 'Bordeaux' originated from a cross made in 2004 between 'Fontenotte' as the female parent and 'Romanze' as the male parent at the Kweekbedrijf Smeenge private breeding facility in Tollebeek, The Netherlands. Seed from the cross were sown in the greenhouse at Tollebeek in 2005. The resulting tubers were harvested and planted in the field in the spring of 2006. One of the selected progeny was given the designation 'Bordeaux'. Selection criteria were negative mass selection for agronomic characteristics and resistance to various diseases.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Bordeaux' was conducted during the growing season of 2014 in Drummond, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of a single row with 60 plants spaced 0.3 metres apart for each variety. The distance between rows within the trial was 0.9 metres. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
