Variety Description
Variety used for comparison: 'Yukon Gold'
Summary: The lightsprout of 'Capri' is ovoid in shape, medium to large with a medium number of root tips whereas that of 'Yukon Gold' is spherical in shape, small and has few root tips. The entire lightsprout of 'Capri' has medium density pubescence whereas the pubescence is dense at the base and sparse at the tip on the lightsprout of 'Yukon Gold'. The size of the tip of the lightsprout in relation to the base is small for 'Capri' whereas it is medium for 'Yukon Gold'. The intensity of the anthocyanin colouration at the tip of the lightsprout is absent or very weak for 'Capri' whereas it is of medium intensity for 'Yukon Gold'. The plant of 'Capri' has a semi-upright growth habit whereas that of 'Yukon Gold' has an upright growth habit. The stem of 'Capri' has no anthocyanin colouration whereas the extent of anthocyanin colouration is medium along the entire stem of 'Yukon Gold'. The second pair of lateral leaflets for 'Capri' is large whereas it is medium size on 'Yukon Gold'. At the apical rosette, the leaflet blade of 'Capri' is pubescent whereas it is glabrous for 'Yukon Gold'. The extent of anthocyanin colouration of the flower bud is absent or very low for 'Capri' whereas it is of medium extent for 'Yukon Gold'. The plant of 'Capri' is shorter than that of 'Yukon Gold'. 'Capri' has large inflorescences whereas those of 'Yukon Gold' are small to medium size. On the upper side of the midrib of the leaf, the extent of anthocyanin colouration is absent or very weak for 'Capri' whereas it is high for 'Yukon Gold'. The tuber of 'Capri' is oval in shape with medium yellow flesh whereas the tuber of 'Yukon Gold' is short oval in shape with light yellow flesh. The colour at the base of the eye on the tuber of 'Capri' is yellow whereas it is red on the tuber of 'Yukon Gold'.

Origin & Breeding History: The variety 'Capri' originated from a cross made in 1999 between 'Marabel' as the female parent and the selection designated '1322-18' as the male parent at the Alexander von Zwehl private breeding station in Oberarnbach, Germany. Seed from the cross were sown in the greenhouse in 2000. The resulting tubers were harvested and planted in the field in the spring of 2001. One of the selected progeny was given the designation 'Capri'. Selection criteria were negative mass selection for agronomic characteristics and resistance to various diseases.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Capri' was conducted during the growing season of 2014 in Drummond, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of a single row with 60 plants spaced 0.3 metres apart for each variety. The distance between rows within the trial was 0.9 metres. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
