Variety used for comparison: 'Mozart'
Summary: The lightsprout of 'Prince of Orange' is ovoid in shape and of medium to large size whereas that of 'Mozart' is spherical in shape and small. The intensity of the anthocyanin colouration of the lightsprout is strong at the base and medium at the tip for 'Prince of Orange' whereas the intensity of anthocyanin colouration is absent or very weak for the entire lightsprout of 'Mozart'. The pubescence on the lightsprout of 'Prince of Orange' is medium to dense at the base and of medium density at the tip whereas the pubescence on the entire lightsprout of 'Mozart' is absent or very sparse. The extent of the anthocyanin colouration along the entire stem of 'Prince of Orange' is medium whereas it is high for 'Mozart'. The leaflet from the second pair of lateral leaflets is as broad as it is long for 'Prince of Orange' whereas the leaflet is narrower than it is long for 'Mozart'. The extent of anthocyanin colouration of the flower bud is absent or very low for 'Prince of Orange' whereas it is medium for 'Mozart'. The plant of 'Prince of Orange' is taller than that of 'Mozart'. The extent of anthocyanin colouration on the peduncle is low for 'Prince of Orange' whereas it is high for 'Mozart'. The tuber of 'Prince of Orange' is long oval to long with dark yellow flesh whereas the tuber of 'Mozart' is oval with medium yellow flesh. The colour at the base of the eye on the tuber of 'Prince of Orange' is yellow whereas it is white on the tuber of 'Mozart'.

Origin & Breeding History: The variety 'Prince of Orange' originated from a cross made in 2003 between 'Susanne' as the female parent and 'Laura' as the male parent at the HZPC Research & Development Centre in Metslawier, The Netherlands. The variety was selected from the F1 progeny in 2005. Selection criteria included internal and external quality, yield and resistance against different diseases and pests. The testing was conducted in The Netherlands and at different locations abroad.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Prince of Orange' was conducted during the growing season of 2014 in Drummond, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of a single row with 60 plants spaced 0.3 metres apart for each variety. The distance between rows within the trial was 0.9 metres. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
