Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Russet Burbank'

Summary: The lightsprout of 'AAC Stout' is conical shaped with short lateral shoots whereas that of 'Russet Burbank' is ovoid with lateral shoots of medium length. The pubescence of the lightsprout is sparse to medium for 'AAC Stout' whereas it is dense for 'Russet Burbank'. The foliage structure of 'AAC Stout' is a leaf type with the foliage closed and stems not, or hardly, visible whereas 'Russet Burbank' is an intermediate type with the foliage half open and stems partly visible. The leaf colour of 'AAC Stout' is light green whereas it is medium to dark green for 'Russet Burbank'. The leaflets of 'AAC Stout' have weak waviness along the margin whereas those of 'Russet Burbank' have medium waviness along the margin. The glossiness of the upper side of the leaflet of 'AAC Stout' is dull whereas it is medium for 'Russet Burbank'. The extent of anthocyanin colouration of the flower bud is absent for 'AAC Stout' whereas it is medium for 'Russet Burbank'. The plants of 'AAC Stout' are shorter than those of 'Russet Burbank'. The frequency of inflorescences per plant is high for 'AAC Stout' whereas the frequency is low to medium for 'Russet Burbank'. The tubers of 'AAC Stout' have a long oval shape with cream coloured flesh and shallow eyes whereas those of 'Russet Burbank' have a long shape with white flesh and medium depth eyes.

Description:

PLANT: leaf type foliage structure where foliage is closed and stems are not, or hardly visible, semi-upright growth habit, matures mid to late season

STEM: no anthocyanin colouration

LEAF: medium sized outline, intermediate to open, light green colour, no anthocyanin colouration on upper side of midrib
SECOND PAIR OF LATERAL LEAFLETS: medium to large, width is narrower than it is long
LEAFLETS: medium to strong presence of secondary leaflets, no coalescence of terminal and lateral leaflets, weak waviness of margin, medium depth of veins, dull upper side, pubescent blade at apical rosette

INFLORESCENCE: high frequency per plant, medium to large, no anthocyanin colouration on peduncle
FLOWER BUD: no anthocyanin colouration
COROLLA: medium size, absent or very low extent and intensity of anthocyanin colouration on inner side, absent or very low proportion of blue in anthocyanin colouration

TUBER: long oval shape, cream coloured flesh
TUBER EYE: shallow depth, white at base
TUBER SKIN: reddish brown

Origin & Breeding History: 'AAC Stout' (experimental designations 'CV99222-2' and 'CO99222') originated from a cross made at the San Luis Valley Research Farm, Colorado State University, USA in 1999 between the female parent designated 'CO94044-2' and the male parent variety 'Atlantic'. In 2000, true potato seed was sown in a greenhouse at Colorado State University and the resulting seedling tubers were planted in 2001 at the Vauxhall Research Substation of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in Vauxhall, Alberta. A clone designated 'CV99222-2' was selected in 2001, and progressed through 4-hill, 10-hill, and 50-hill generation stages of selection and evaluation at Vauxhall in 2002, 2003 and 2004, respectively. Selection criteria included vine maturity, shape and size of tuber, specific gravity, culinary quality, fry colour at harvest and out of long-term storage, incidence of tuber defects, and reaction to diseases including common scab, late blight, fusarium dry rot and verticillium wilt. 'CV99222-2' was further evaluated in the Western Canadian Regional Potato Trials from 2005 to 2008.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'AAC Stout' was conducted during the 2014 growing season at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Potato Research Centre in Fredericton, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of 2 replicates with 30 plants per variety in each replicate, grown in two 7.5 metre length rows spaced 90 centimetres apart. Plants were spaced 25 centimetres apart in the row. Measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on LSD values.
