Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Milva'

Summary: The shape of the lightsprout of 'Georgina' is spherical whereas the shape of the lightsprout of 'Milva' is ovoid. The intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the base of the lightsprout is medium to strong for 'Georgina' whereas the intensity is very strong for 'Milva'. The proportion of blue in the anthocyanin colouration of the base of the lightsprout is medium for 'Georgina' whereas the proportion of blue is high for 'Milva'. The pubescence of the base of the lightsprout is dense for 'Georgina' whereas the pubescence is absent or very sparse for 'Milva'. The intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the tip of the lightsprout is absent or very weak for 'Georgina' whereas the intensity is strong for 'Milva'. The plants of 'Georgina' are taller than the plants of 'Milva'. The anthocyanin colouration of the stem is absent for 'Georgina' whereas the extent of anthocyanin colouration is low for 'Milva'. The size of the outline of the leaf of 'Georgina' is large whereas the leaf of 'Milva' is of medium size. The presence of secondary leaflets is medium to strong for 'Georgina' whereas the presence of secondary leaflets is weak for 'Milva'. In reaction to light, the tuber skin of 'Georgina' develops a medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration whereas the tuber skin of 'Milva' develops an absent or very weak to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration.

Description:

LIGHTSPROUT: small to medium size, spherical shape, few to medium number of root tips, short lateral shoots
LIGHTSPROUT BASE: medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration, medium proportion of blue in anthocyanin colouration, dense pubescence
LIGHTSPROUT TIP: medium size in relation to base, closed to intermediate between closed and open habit, absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration, medium to dense pubescence

PLANT: foliage structure is intermediate type where foliage is half open and stems are partly visible, semi-upright growth habit, mid-season to late maturity

STEM: no anthocyanin colouration

LEAF: outline is large, openness is open, light to medium green on upper side, absent or very low extent and absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration on upper side of midrib, medium to strong presence of secondary leaflets, absent or very low frequency of coalescence of terminal and lateral leaflets
SECOND PAIR OF LATERAL LEAFLETS: medium size, leaflet ranges from narrower than long to as broad as long
LEAFLET: absent or very weak waviness of margin, shallow to medium depth of veins, medium glossiness of upper side, glabrous blade at apical rosette

INFLORESCENCE: low to medium frequency per plant, small to medium size
PEDUNCLE: absent or very low extent of anthocyanin colouration
FLOWER BUD: absent or very low extent of anthocyanin colouration
COROLLA: medium size
COROLLA (INNER SIDE): absent or very low extent of anthocyanin colouration, absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration, absent or low proportion of blue in anthocyanin colouration

TUBER: short oval to oval shape, medium yellow flesh
TUBER EYE: shallow, yellow at base
TUBER SKIN: yellow, develops medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration in reaction to light

Origin & Breeding History: 'Georgina' originated from a cross conducted in 2001 between the selections designated 'L 96/225/309' and 'E 96/22/53'. It was selected in 2003 for its positive agronomic characteristics.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Georgina' was conducted during the growing season of 2015 in Drummond, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of a single, 18.5 metre long row containing 60 plants spaced 0.3 metres apart for each variety. The distance between rows within the trial was 0.9 metres. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
