Summary: The base of the lightsprout of 'Mariola' has an absent or low to medium proportion of blue in the anthocyanin colouration whereas the base of the lightsprout of 'Milva' has a high proportion of blue in the anthocyanin colouration. 'Mariola' has a lightsprout with medium density of pubescence at the base whereas 'Milva' has a lightsprout that is glabrous at the base. The lightsprout tip of 'Mariola' has a habit that is intermediate between closed and open and dense pubescence whereas the lightsprout tip of 'Milva' has a habit that is closed and sparse pubescence. The plants of 'Mariola' are taller than the plants of 'Milva'.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Mariola' originated from a cross conducted in 2001 between 'E96/359/1049' and 'E96/22/53' in Ebstorf (Lower Saxony, Germany). 'Mariola' was selected in 2002 for its positive agronomic characteristics.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Mariola' was conducted by Global Agri Services Inc. during the growing season of 2016 in Drummond, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of a single, 19.5 metre long row containing 65 plants spaced 0.3 metres apart for each variety. The distance between rows within the trial was 0.9 metres. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
