Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'Atlantic' and 'Snowden'
Summary: In relation to the base, the lightsprout tip of 'Manistee' is small whereas the lightsprout tip in relation to the base for 'Atlantic' is large and for 'Snowden' is medium size. The intensity of the anthocyanin colouration of the lightsprout tip is weak for 'Manistee' whereas the intensity of the anthocyanin colouration of the lightsprout tip is medium for 'Atlantic' and absent or very weak for 'Snowden'. From the second pair of leaflets, the leaflet of 'Manistee' is large whereas the leaflet of 'Atlantic' is medium to large and the leaflet of 'Snowden' is medium sized. The depth of the veins of the leaflet is shallow for 'Manistee' whereas the depth of the veins of the leaflet is deep for 'Atlantic' and medium depth for 'Snowden'. The inner side of the corolla of 'Manistee' has medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration whereas the corolla of 'Atlantic' has a weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration and the corolla of 'Snowden' has an absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration.
Description:
LIGHTSPROUT: small to medium size, spherical shape, medium number of root tips, short lateral shoots
LIGHTSPROUT BASE: weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration, absent or low proportion of blue in anthocyanin colouration, medium pubescent density
LIGHTSPROUT TIP: small size in relation to base, closed habit, weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration, absent or very sparse pubescence
PLANT: foliage structure is intermediate to leaf type where foliage is half open to closed and stems are partly to not or hardly visible, semi-upright growth habit, matures mid-season
STEM: absent or very low extent of anthocyanin colouration
LEAF: medium outline size, intermediate between closed and open, medium darkness of green on upper side, absent or very low extent and absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of upper side of midrib, weak to medium presence of secondary leaflets, absent or very low frequency of coalescence of terminal and lateral leaflets
SECOND PAIR OF LATERAL LEAFLETS: leaflet is large and narrower than long
LEAFLET: absent or very weak waviness of margin, shallow veins, medium degree of glossiness of upper side, glabrous blade in apical rosette
INFLORESCENCE: high frequency per plant, medium size
PEDUNCLE: absent or very low extent of anthocyanin colouration
FLOWER BUD: absent or very low extent of anthocyanin colouration
COROLLA: medium size
COROLLA (INNER SIDE): medium extent of anthocyanin colouration, medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration, absent or low proportion of blue in anthocyanin colouration
TUBER: round shape, cream flesh
TUBER EYE: medium depth, yellow at base
TUBER SKIN: light beige, develops strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration in reaction to light
Origin & Breeding History: 'Manistee' originated from a cross conducted in 1999 between 'Snowden' and 'MSH098-2', as part of a breeding program at Michigan State University in East Lansing Michigan. 'Manistee' was selected in 2000 for its positive agronomic characteristics.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Manistee' was conducted by Global Agri Services Inc. during the growing season of 2016 in Drummond, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of a single, 19.5 metre long row containing 65 plants spaced 0.3 metres apart for each variety. The distance between rows within the trial was 0.9 metres. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety.
