Variety Description
Variety used for comparison: 'Elfe'
Summary: The tip of the lightsprout of 'Cardinia' has an open habit whereas the tip of the lightsprout of 'Elfe' has a closed habit. The lightsprout of 'Cardinia' has short lateral shoots whereas the lightsprout of 'Elfe' has medium long lateral shoots. The plants of 'Cardinia' are shorter than the plants of 'Elfe'. The leaf outline of 'Cardinia' is medium size whereas the leaf outline of 'Elfe' is large. From the second pair of lateral leaflets, the leaflet of 'Cardinia' is medium in size whereas the leaflet of 'Elfe' is large. The frequency of coalescence of the terminal and lateral leaflets of 'Cardinia' is very high whereas the frequency of coalescence of the terminal and lateral leaflets on 'Elfe' is low.
Description:
LIGHTSPROUT: medium size, ovoid shape, medium number of root tips, short lateral shoots
LIGHTSPROUT BASE: strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration, medium proportion of blue in anthocyanin colouration, medium density of pubescence
LIGHTSPROUT TIP: medium size in relation to base, open habit, medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration, dense pubescence
PLANT: foliage structure is stem type where foliage is open and stems are clearly visible, upright growth habit, matures mid to late season
STEM: low extent of anthocyanin colouration at base only
LEAF: medium outline size, openness is intermediate to open, medium green colour on upper side, absent or very low extent and absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of upper side of midrib, weak presence of secondary leaflets, very high frequency of coalescence of terminal and lateral leaflets
SECOND PAIR OF LATERAL LEAFLETS: leaflet is medium size and narrower than long
LEAFLET: weak to medium waviness of margin, medium depth of veins, medium glossiness of upper side, pubescent blade at apical rosette
INFLORESCENCE: absent or very low to low frequency per plant, small
PEDUNCLE: absent or very low extent of anthocyanin colouration
FLOWER BUD: low extent of anthocyanin colouration
COROLLA: small
COROLLA (INNER SIDE): absent or very low extent of anthocyanin colouration, absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration, absent or low proportion of blue in anthocyanin colouration
TUBER: oval shape, medium yellow flesh
TUBER EYE: shallow, yellow at base
TUBER SKIN: yellow, develops absent or very weak to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration in reaction to light
Origin & Breeding History: 'Cardinia' originated from a cross conducted in 2002 between 'E 98/76/195/' and 'L 98/9/388', in Ebstorf, Germany. 'Cardinia' was selected in 2003 for its positive agronomic characteristics.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Cardinia' was conducted by Global Agri Services Inc. during the growing season of 2016 in Drummond, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of a single, 19.5 metre long row containing 65 plants spaced 0.3 metres apart for each variety. The distance between rows within the trial was 0.9 metres. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
