Variety used for comparison: 'Atlantic'

Summary: The base of the lightsprout of 'Madison' has a weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration while that of 'Atlantic' has a strong intensity. The tip of the lightsprout of 'Madison' has dense pubescence and an intermediate habit while that of 'Atlantic' has sparse to medium density and a closed habit. The leaf of 'Madison' is medium to dark green while the leaf of 'Atlantic' is light to medium green. 'Madison' has an absent or very low extent of anthocyanin colouration along the midrib of the upper side of the leaf while it is low in 'Atlantic'. 'Madison' has an absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration along the midrib of the upper side of the leaf while it is of weak intensity for 'Atlantic'. The waviness of the margin of the leaflet of 'Madison' is weak to medium while it is absent or very weak in 'Atlantic'. At the apical rosette, the leaflet blade of 'Madison' has pubescence while that of 'Atlantic' does not. 'Madison' has a shorter plant height than 'Atlantic'.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Madison' originated from a cross between the variety 'Pirol' and the selection 'L 95/561/867' conducted in 2002 in Vierhuizen, Netherlands. From the resulting progeny, 'Madison' was selected in 2004 based on positive agronomic criteria.

Tests & Trials: The comparative test and trial for 'Madison' was conducted by Global Agri Services Inc. during the growing season of 2017 in Drummond, New Brunswick. There were 70 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. The trial consisted of a single, 21.2 metre long row with plants spaced 0.3 metres apart for each variety. The distance between rows within the trial was 0.9 metres. The observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety.
