Variety used for comparison: 'Fabula'
Summary: The base of the lightsprout of 'Belmonda' has a medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration and sparse to medium density of pubescence whereas that of 'Fabula' has an absent or very weak to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration and dense pubescence. The upper side of the leaf of 'Belmonda' is medium green whereas it is light green for 'Fabula'. The second pair of lateral leafets for 'Belmonda' are medium sized with a weak to medium degree of waviness of margin whereas those of 'Fabula' are large with an absent to weak degree of waviness of margin. The flower bud of 'Belmonda' has an absent or very weak extent of anthocyanin colouration whereas that of 'Fabula' has a medium extent. The plants of 'Belmonda' are taller than those of 'Fabula'. The tuber of 'Belmonda' has yellow skin and a medium to dark yellow flesh whereas the tuber of 'Fabula' has light beige skin and light yellow flesh.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Belmonda' (experimental designation 02-006-7) originated from a cross between 'Marabel', as the female parent, and 'Leyla', as the male parent, conducted in 2002 at the SaKa Pflansenzucht GmbH & Co. KG breeding program in Windeby, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. In 2003, the seed resulting from the cross was sown in the greenhouse. The resulting tubers were harvested and planted in the field in 2004 in Windeby, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. 'Belmonda' was selected in 2004 based on negative mass selection for agronomic characteristics and disease resistance.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Belmonda' was conducted by Global Agri Services Inc. during the 2019 growing season in Drummond, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of a single, 21 metre long row per variety. Each row contained 70 plants spaced 0.3 metres apart with an inter-row spacing of 0.9 metres. Measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety. The mean difference was significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
