Varieties used for comparison: 'Goldrush' and 'Hilite Russet'
Summary: The lightsprout of 'Campagna' is conical whereas the lightsprout of 'Goldrush' is ovoid and that of 'Hilite Russet' is spherical. The intensity of anthocyanin colouration at the base of the lightsprout for 'Campagna' is absent or very weak to weak whereas it is of medium intensity for 'Goldrush' and very strong for 'Hilite Russet'. At the base of the lightsprout, the proportion of blue is absent or low on 'Campagna' whereas the proportion of blue is medium on the lightsprout for 'Goldrush' and high for 'Hilite Russet'. The pubescence at the base of the lightsprout is sparse for 'Campagna' while it is dense for 'Goldrush'. The lightsprout tip is large in relation to the base of the lightsprout of 'Campagna' while it is small for 'Goldrush'. The anthocyanin colouration of the tip of the lightsprout is absent to very weak intensity while it is weak for 'Goldrush' and strong for 'Hilite Russet'. The upper side of the leaf of 'Campagna' is light green whereas the leaf of 'Goldrush' is medium green and that of 'Hilite Russet' is dark green. 'Campagna' has a low to medium frequency of inflorescences per plant while 'Goldrush' has an absent or very low frequency. The inflorescence of 'Campagna' is small while it is large for 'Hilite Russet'. The intensity of anthocyanin colouration on the inner side of the corolla for 'Campagna' is weak whereas it is of medium intensity on 'Goldrush' and absent or very weak on 'Hilite Russet'. The eye of the tuber of 'Campagna' is very shallow to shallow whereas the eye of 'Hilite Russet' is of medium depth. The flesh of the tuber of 'Campagna' is cream coloured whereas it is white for both reference varieties.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Campagna' (experimental designation QP02228.08) originated from a controlled cross made by the Centre de recherche des Buissons in 2002, at Pointe-aux-Outardes, Quebec between 'Péribonka', as the female parent, and 'NY 112', as the male parent. In 2003, true potato seeds from this cross were sown in a greenhouse, and the resulting seedling tubers were planted in the field at the Centre de recherche des Buissons. A clone designated as QP02228.08 was selected in 2004 and evaluated for 4 generations from 2005 to 2008. In 2009, screening trials were conducted at Pointe-aux-Outardes and in Ste-Ubalde, Quebec to assess the time of maturity. The selection criteria used in the field and laboratory included yield, visual appearance; tuber size, shape, density; culinary quality, incidence of tuber defects, fry and chip colour from processing, maturation and the reaction to common scab, rhizoctonia and other diseases. From 2010 to 2013, additional testing was done at three locations in Quebec.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Campagna' was conducted during the 2017 growing season at Ste-Croix de Lotbinière, Quebec. The trial consisted of 4 replicates, a total of 68 plants for each variety, grown in 5.1 metre length rows spaced 92 centimetres apart. The plants were spaced 30 centimetres apart within the row. The measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety.
