Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'Andover' and 'Snowden'
Summary: The shape of the lightsprout of 'AAC Weschip' is conical whereas it is ovoid for 'Snowden' and spherical for 'Andover'. The base of the lightsprout of ' AAC Weschip ' has a strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration whereas the intensity of anthocyanin colouration is medium for 'Andover' and absent for 'Snowden'. The base of the lightsprout of ' AAC Weschip' has a medium proportion of blue whereas it is absent or low for the reference varieties. The pubescence of the base of the lightsprout of 'AAC Weschip' is sparse whereas it is of medium pubescence for the reference varieties. 'AAC Weschip' has few root tips on the lightsprout whereas the reference varieties have a medium number. The extent of anthocyanin colouration halfway up the stem is low on 'AAC Weschip' whereas it is absent on the stem of 'Snowden'. The presence of secondary leaflets in 'AAC Weschip' is medium while it is weak in the reference varieties. The plant of 'AAC Weschip' is shorter than that of 'Andover' and taller than that of 'Snowden'. 'AAC Weschip' has a high frequency of inflorescences per plant whereas the frequency is low for 'Snowden' and medium for 'Andover'. The inflorescences of 'AAC Weschip' are large whereas those of 'Andover' are of medium size and those of 'Snowden' are small. The tuber of 'AAC Weschip' is round whereas the tuber of 'Snowden' has a short oval shape. The tuber flesh of 'AAC Weschip' is a light yellow colour whereas it is white for the reference varieties.

Origin & Breeding History: 'AAC Weschip' (experimental designations 'AR2010-03_F05020' and 15093-21) originated from the cross of F91031 and ND860-2 made in 2003 in Fredericton, New Brunswick. In 2004, the progeny designated as 15093-21 was selected. Selection criteria were clonal selection for adaptation, tuber type, flesh colour and chipping quality.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'AAC Weschip' was conducted during the 2016 growing season at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's Fredericton Research and Development Centre in Fredericton, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of 2 replicates with 30 plants per variety in each replicate, grown in two 7.5 metre length rows spaced 90 centimetres apart. Plants were spaced 25 centimetres apart in the row. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants or parts of 10 plants of each variety. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on LSD values.
