Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Kennebec'

Summary: 'Crisper' has a strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration at the base of the lightsprout while it is of medium intensity in 'Kennebec'. The plant foliage structure of 'Crisper' is a stem type (foliage open, stems clearly visible) while that of 'Kennebec' is a leaf type (foliage closed, stems not, or hardly, visible). The plant of 'Crisper' has an upright growth habit while the plant of 'Kennebec' has a semi-upright growth habit. The second pair of lateral leaflets are medium sized in 'Crisper' while they are large in 'Kennebec'. The waviness of the margin of the leaflet of 'Crisper' is medium while it is absent or very weak in 'Kennebec'. The inflorescence of 'Crisper' is small while it is medium sized in 'Kennebec'. The eye of the tuber of 'Crisper' is shallow while it is of medium depth for 'Kennebec'. The tuber flesh of 'Crisper' is light yellow while it is white for 'Kennebec'.

Description:

LIGHTSPROUT: medium size, ovoid, many root tips, short lateral shoots
LIGHTSPROUT BASE: strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration, absent or low proportion of blue in the anthocyanin colouration, medium pubescence

PLANT: stem type (foliage open, stems clearly visible) foliage structure, upright growth habit, mid-season maturity

STEM: low extent of anthocyanin colouration at base only

LEAF: medium outline, open, weak presence of secondary leaflets, light to medium green, low extent of anthocyanin colouration on the midrib of upper side, weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration on the midrib of upper side, absent or very low frequency of coalescence of terminal and lateral leaflets
SECOND PAIR OF LATERAL LEAFLETS: medium size, narrower than long width in relation to length
LEAFLET: medium waviness of margin, medium depth veins, dull upper side, pubescence present on blade at apical rosette

Origin & Breeding History: 'Crisper' originated from a cross between the varieties 'Chipie' and 'Hertha', conducted in 1997, at the Station de Recherche du Comité Nord, Bretteville du Grand Caux, France. From the resulting progeny, 'Crisper' was selected in 2000 based on negative mass selection, dry matter content, cooking and frying quality, industrial end use and disease resistances.

Tests & Trials: The comparative test and trial for 'Crisper' was conducted by Global Agri Services Inc. during the growing season of 2017 in Drummond, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of a single, 21.2 metre long row containing 70 plants spaced 0.3 metres apart for each variety. The distance between rows within the trial was 0.9 metres. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety.
