Variety Description
Variety used for comparison: 'Adora'
Summary: The plants of 'Primabelle' are shorter than the plants of 'Adora'. The lightsprout of 'Primabelle' is large, broad cylindrical in shape and has weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration at the base whereas the lightsprout of 'Adora' is medium size, ovoid in shape and has strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration at the base. The leaf of 'Primabelle' has an absent or very low extent of anthocyanin colouration on the midrib whereas the leaf of 'Adora' has a medium extent of anthocyanin colouration on the midrib. 'Primabelle' has a flower corolla with absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration on the inner side whereas the corolla of 'Adora' has a medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration on the inner side.
Description:
LIGHTSPROUT: large, broad cylindrical shape, few root tips, short lateral shoots
LIGHTSPROUT BASE: weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration, absent or low to medium proportion of blue in anthocyanin colouration, medium density of pubescence
LIGHTSPROUT TIP: small in relation to base, closed habit, absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration, medium to dense pubescence
PLANT: foliage structure is intermediate type where foliage is half open and stems are partly visible, semi-upright growth habit, matures early
STEM: absent or very low extent of anthocyanin colouration
LEAF: outline is medium size, openness is intermediate between closed and open, medium to strong presence of secondary leaflets, medium green upper side, absent or very low extent and absent to very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of upper side of midrib, absent or very low frequency of coalescence of terminal and lateral leaflets
SECOND PAIR OF LATERAL LEAFLETS: medium size, leaflet is narrower than long
LEAFLET: weak to medium waviness of margin, medium depth of veins, dull upper side, glabrous blade at apical rosette
INFLORESCENCE: low to medium frequency per plant, small to medium in size
PEDUNCLE: absent or very low extent of anthocyanin colouration
FLOWER BUD: absent or very low extent of anthocyanin colouration
COROLLA: large, absent or very weak intensity and absent or very low extent of anthocyanin colouration on inner side, absent or low proportion of blue in anthocyanin colouration on inner side
TUBER: short oval to oval shape, light to medium yellow flesh
TUBER EYE: shallow, yellow at base
TUBER SKIN: yellow, develops weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration in reaction to light
Origin & Breeding History: 'Primabelle' originated from a cross between the variety 'Carrera', as the female parent, and the variety 'Agata', as the male parent, conducted in 1999, at HZPC Holland B.V. in Metslawier, Netherlands. From the resulting progeny, 'Primabelle' was selected in 2000 based on yield, internal and external tuber quality as well as disease and insect resistances.
Tests & Trials: The comparative test and trial for 'Primabelle' was conducted during the growing season of 2017 in Drummond, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of a single, 21.2 metre long row containing 70 plants spaced 0.3 metres apart for each variety. The distance between rows within the trial was 0.9 metres. The observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety. The mean difference was significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
