Variety used for comparison: 'Violet Queen'

Summary: The lightsprout of 'Double Fun' is large and has a broad cylindrical shape whereas that of 'Violet Queen' is medium in size and ovoid. The tip of the lightsprout of 'Double Fun' has a very strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration whereas the intensity is strong for 'Violet Queen'. The plants of 'Double Fun' have a stem type foliage structure and an upright to semi-upright growth habit whereas the plants of 'Violet Queen' have an intermediate type foliage structure and a semi-upright to spreading growth habit. 'Double Fun' has a very high intensity of anthocyanin colouration on the stem and on the midrib on the upper side of the leaf whereas 'Violet Queen' has a medium to high intensity of anthocyanin colouration on the stem and high intensity of anthocyanin colouration on the midrib. The second pair of lateral leaflets are as broad as long for 'Double Fun' whereas they are narrower than long for 'Violet Queen'. The frequency of coalescence of the terminal and lateral leaflets is absent or very low for 'Double Fun' whereas it is low for 'Violet Queen'. The plants of 'Double Fun' are taller than those of 'Violet Queen'. The corolla of 'Double Fun' is medium sized with a weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration on the inner side whereas it is small with absent or very low anthocyanin colouration for 'Violet Queen'.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Double Fun' originated from the cross between 'VG3CAE 5', as the female parent, and 'Charmante', as the male parent, conducted in 2001 at the HZPC Research B.V. in Metslawier, The Netherlands. 'Double Fun' was identified at the F1 generation in 2002 and subsequently tested in The Netherlands and other locations abroad. Selection criteria were based on yield, internal and external quality as well as disease and insect resistance.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Double Fun' was conducted by Global Agri Services Inc. during the 2018 growing season in Drummond, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of a single, 21 metre long row containing 70 plants spaced 0.3 metres apart for each variety. The distance between rows within the trial was 0.9 metres. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety. The mean difference was significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
