Summary: The intensity of anthocyanin colouration at the tip of the lightsprout of 'Basin Russet' is weak whereas it is very strong for 'Dione'. The pubescence of the tip of the lightsprout of 'Basin Russet' is medium to dense whereas it is sparse for 'Dione'. The anthocyanin colouration on the stem of 'Basin Russet' is of medium to high extent along the entire stem whereas it is of low extent halfway up the stem for 'Dione'. There is a high extent of anthocyanin colouration along the midrib of the upper side of the leaf of 'Basin Russet' whereas it is absent or very low for 'Dione'. The frequency of coalescence of the terminal and lateral leaflets of 'Basin Russet' is absent or very low whereas it is medium for 'Dione'. The plants of 'Basin Russet' are shorter than those of 'Dione'. There is a medium to high extent of anthocyanin colouration on the peduncle of 'Basin Russet' whereas it is absent or very low for 'Dione'. The tuber skin of 'Basin Russet' is reddish brown whereas it is light beige for 'Dione'.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Basin Russet' (experimental designation AR 04-3781) originated from a cross between 'AR 97-3296', as the female parent, and 'AR 92-1042', as the male parent at Agrico Research B.V. in Bant, Netherlands. From the resulting progeny, 'Basin Russet' was selected in 2005 based on negative mass selection for agronomic characteristics and disease resistances.

Tests & Trials: The comparative test and trial for 'Basin Russet' was conducted by Global Agri Services Inc. during the growing season of 2017 in Drummond, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of a single, 21.2 metre long row containing 70 plants spaced 0.3 metres apart for each variety. The distance between rows within the trial was 0.9 metres. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety. The mean difference was significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
