Variety Description
Variety used for comparison: 'Gala'
Summary: The lightsprout of 'Sanjava' is small and has few root tips whereas that of 'Gala' is medium sized and has a medium number of root tips. The proportion of blue anthocyanin colouration at the base of the lightsprout of 'Sanjava' is absent or low whereas it is medium for 'Gala'. The pubescence at the tip of the lightsprout of 'Sanjava' is absent or very sparse whereas it is sparse at the tip for 'Gala'. The extent of anthocyanin colouration on the stem of 'Sanjava' is absent of very low whereas it is low for 'Gala'. The second pair of lateral leaflets are small to medium sized in 'Sanjava' whereas they are medium to large in 'Gala'. The depth of the veins on the leaflet of 'Sanjava' is shallow whereas it is medium to deep on the leaflet of 'Gala'. The plants of 'Sanjava' are shorter than those of 'Gala'. The anthocyanin colouration on the inner side of the corolla of 'Sanjava' is of medium extent with weak intensity whereas the extent is absent or very low with absent or very weak intensity for 'Gala'.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Sanjava' (experimental designation BS 4427-3) originated from the cross between 'Gala', as the female parent, and 'Leyla', as the male parent, conducted at the Bavaria-Saat GbR breeding station, in Oberarnbach, Germany, in 2004. The resulting seed was sown in a greenhouse in 2005 and the resulting tubers field planted in Oberarnbach, Germany, in 2006. One of the progeny, designated as BS 4427-3, was identified in 2006. Selection criteria was based on negative mass selection for agronomic characteristics and disease resistance.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Sanjava' was conducted by Global Agri Services Inc. during the 2018 growing season in Drummond, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of a single, 21 metre long row containing 70 plants spaced 0.3 metres apart for each variety. The distance between rows within the trial was 0.9 metres. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety. The mean difference was significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
