Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Jelly'

Summary: The lightsprout of 'Donata' is spherical in shape whereas that of 'Jelly' is ovoid. The intensity of anthocyanin coloration on the lightsprout of 'Donata' is weak to medium at the base and absent to very weak at the tip whereas the intensity of anthocyanin coloration is strong at the base and tip of the lightsprout of 'Jelly'. The stem of 'Donata' has an absent or very low extent of anthocyanin colouration whereas the stem of 'Jelly' has a low to medium extent of anthocyanin colouration. The leaflet for 'Donata' has an absent or very weak degree of waviness of margin whereas the leaflet for 'Jelly' has a medium to strong degree of waviness of margin. The flower bud of 'Donata' has an absent or very low extent of anthocyanin colouration whereas that of 'Jelly' has a high extent of anthocyanin colouration. The plants of 'Donata' have a high frequency of inflorescences whereas the plants of 'Jelly' have a low frequency of inflorescences.

LIGHTSPROUT TIP: medium sized in relation to base, closed habit, absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration, absent or very sparse to sparse pubescence

PLANT: foliage structure is intermediate type where foliage is half open and stems are partly visible, semi-upright growth habit, matures mid to late in the season

STEM: absent or very low extent of anthocyanin colouration

LEAF: medium sized outline, intermediate openness to open, medium to strong presence of secondary leaflets, medium to dark green upper side, absent or very low extent and absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration on upper side of midrib, absent or very low frequency of coalescence of terminal and lateral leaflets
SECOND PAIR OF LATERAL LEAFLETS: large, leaflet is narrower than long

Origin & Breeding History: 'Donata' originated from a cross between L 96/739/677, as the female parent, and E 00/414/487, as the male parent, conducted in 2003 in Ebstorf, Lower Saxony, Germany. 'Donata' was selected in 2004 based on agronomic characteristics.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Donata' was conducted by Global Agri Services Inc. during the 2019 growing season in Drummond, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of a single, 21 metre long row per variety. Each row contained 70 plants spaced 0.3 metres apart with an inter-row spacing of 0.9 metres.
