Variety used for comparison: 'Fenway Red'

Summary: The lightsprout of 'Vicky' is small and has an ovoid shape whereas that of 'Fenway Red' is large and has a broad cylindrical shape. The pubescence on the lightsprout of 'Vicky' is sparse to medium at the base and absent or very sparse to sparse at the tip whereas the pubescence is medium to dense at the base and tip of the lightsprout of 'Fenway Red'. The extent of anthocyanin colouration is high along the entire stem of 'Vicky' whereas it is of medium extent only halfway up the stem of 'Fenway Red'. The presence of secondary leaflets on the leaves of 'Vicky' is strong whereas it is weak to medium for 'Fenway Red'. 'Vicky' has a very high extent of anthocyanin colouration along the midrib of the upper side of the leaf whereas it is low for 'Fenway Red'. The second pair of lateral leaflets are medium sized in 'Vicky' whereas they are large for 'Fenway Red'. 'Vicky' has a medium to large inflorescence while it is small to medium sized for 'Fenway Red'. On the inner side of the corolla, the extent of the anthocyanin colouration is strong for 'Vicky' whereas it is very high for 'Fenway Red'. The tuber of 'Vicky' has a short oval shape whereas that of 'Fenway Red' is round.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Vicky' (experimental designation VDZ 06-264) originated from the cross between 'Mozart', as the female parent, and VDZ 98-117, as the male parent, conducted in 2005 at HZPC Research B.V., in Metslawier, The Netherlands. One of the progeny, designated as VDZ 06-264, was identified in 2006 and subsequently tested in The Netherlands and other locations abroad. Selection criteria was based on yield, internal and external quality as well as disease and insect resistance.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Vicky' was conducted by Global Agri Services Inc. during the 2018 growing season in Drummond, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of a single, 21 metre long row containing 70 plants spaced 0.3 metres apart for each variety. The distance between rows within the trial was 0.9 metres. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety.
