Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Jelly'

Summary: On the lightsprout for 'Montana', the pubescence is sparse at the base and absent or very sparse to sparse at the tip whereas the pubescence is of medium density on the base and tip of the lightsprout for 'Jelly'. In relation to the base of the lightsprout, the tip is medium sized for 'Montana' whereas the tip is small for 'Jelly'. The intensity of anthocyanin colouration at the tip of the lightsprout of 'Montana' is weak whereas it is of medium intensity for 'Jelly'. The lightsprout of 'Montana' has many root tips whereas 'Jelly' has a medium number of root tips. The anthocyanin colouration on the stem of 'Montana' is located halfway up the stem whereas it is along the entire stem of 'Jelly'. The leaf outline and second pair of lateral leaflets of 'Montana' are large whereas they are medium sized for 'Jelly'. The depth of the veins on the leaflet of 'Montana' is shallow whereas it is medium to deep on the leaflet of 'Jelly'. The plants of 'Montana' are taller than those of 'Jelly'. The frequency of inflorescences per plant is low to medium for 'Montana' whereas it is absent or very low for 'Jelly'. The inflorescence for 'Montana' is medium sized whereas it is small to very small for 'Jelly'. The plants of 'Montana' mature mid-season whereas the plants of 'Jelly' mature very late in the season.

PLANT: foliage structure is intermediate type where foliage is half-open and stems are partly visible, semi-upright growth habit, matures mid-season

STEM: low extent of anthocyanin colouration halfway up stem

LEAF: large outline, intermediate openness, weak to medium presence of secondary leaflets, medium green upper side, absent or very low extent and absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of upper side of midrib, low frequency of coalescence of terminal and lateral leaflets
SECOND PAIR OF LATERAL LEAFLETS: large, leaflet is slightly narrower than long

Origin & Breeding History: 'Montana' originated from a cross between 'E 99/73/126' and 'E 99/89/130', conducted in 2004 in Ebstorf (Lower Saxon), Germany. One of the progeny designated as, 'Montana' was identified in 2006. Selection was based on positive agronomic criteria.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Montana' was conducted by Global Agri Services Inc. during the 2018 growing season in Drummond, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of a single, 21 metre long row containing 70 plants spaced 0.3 metres apart for each variety. The distance between rows within the trial was 0.9 metres. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety. The mean difference was significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
