Summary: The lightsprout of 'Crop35' is small while that of 'Challenger' is medium in size. The anthocyanin colouration at the base of the lightsprout for 'Crop35' is a strong to very strong intensity with a high proportion of blue while the anthocyanin colouration at the base of the lightsprout for 'Challenger' is an absent or very weak to weak intensity with an absent or low proportion of blue. The tip of the lightsprout for 'Crop35' is a medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration with absent or very sparse to sparse pubesence while the tip of the lightsprout for 'Challenger' has an absent or very low intensity of anthocyanin colouration and a medium density of pubesence. At bud stage, the plants of 'Crop35' have an upright growth habit while those of 'Challenger have a semi-upright growth habit. The plants of 'Crop35' have a medium extent of anthocyanin colouration along the entire stem while those of 'Challenger' have an absent or very low to low extent of anthocyanin colouration at the base of the stem only. The anthocyanin colouration on the inner side of the corolla for 'Crop35' is a high extent of high intensity with a medium proportion of blue while it is an absent or very low extent of absent or very weak intensity and an absent or low porportion of blue for 'Challenger'.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Crop35' (experimental designation 1414-1) originated from the cross between 'Nadine', as the female parent, and 'V394', as the male parent, conducted at The New Zealand Institute for Plant and Food Research Limited, in Lincoln, New Zealand, in 1997. The resulting seed was sown in 1998 and selected tubers field planted in 1999. Selections were made through 10 more vegetatively propagated generations before the variety identified as 1414-1 was selected in 2009 for its yield, tuber shape, size and skin finish.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Crop35' was conducted by Global Agri Services Inc. during the 2018 growing season in Drummond, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of a single, 21 metre long row per variety. Each row contained 70 plants spaced 0.3 metres apart with inter row spacing of 0.9 metres. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety.
