Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Siena' and 'Montreal'

Summary: The lightsprout of 'Paris' is spherical while the lightsprout of 'Siena' is broad cylindrical and that of 'Montreal' is ovoid. The lightsprout tip of 'Paris' has a weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration while the lightsprout tip of 'Siena' has a medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration and that of 'Montreal' has a medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The lightsprout tip of 'Paris' has sparse pubescence while the lightsprout tip of 'Siena' has dense pubescence and that of 'Montreal' has medium to dense pubescence. The leaf of 'Paris' has a weak presence of secondary leaflets while that of 'Siena' has a medium presence of secondary leaflets. The second pair of lateral leaflets of 'Paris' are medium sized while they are large to very large for 'Siena' and large for 'Montreal'. The flower bud of 'Paris' has an absent to very low extent of anthocyanin colouration while that of 'Siena' has a low extent of anthocyanin colouration. The plants of 'Paris' are shorter than those of the reference varieties. The tuber of 'Paris' is round to short oval whereas it is oval to long-oval for 'Siena' and short oval for 'Montreal'. The tuber of 'Paris' has cream coloured flesh while those of the reference varieties have light yellow flesh.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Paris' (experimental designation D 05-47-03) originated from a hybridization conducted at the J.P. van Loon breeding station in Dronten, Netherlands in 2004. The cross was made between the varieties 'Hansa', as the female parent, and 'Felsina', as the male parent. Seed from the cross was planted in a greenhouse in 2005. The resulting tubers were harvested and planted in the field in Dronten, Netherlands in the spring of 2006. The new variety was selected from these progeny in 2006 based on its agronomic characteristics and resistance to various diseases.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Paris' was conducted by Global Agri Services Inc. in Central Blissville, New Brunswick during the 2022 growing season. The field trial consisted of a single, 22 metre long row per variety. Each row contained 70 plants spaced 0.3 metres apart with inter-row spacing of 1.1 metres. Measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety. The mean difference was significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test. Lightsprout characteristics were assessed on 10 tubers harvested from the comparative trial and observed approximately 2.5 to 3 months after sprouting was promoted by exposing the tubers to an external agent.
