Summary: The lightsprout of 'Maritime Russet' is ovoid whereas it is spherical for 'Russet Burbank' and broad cylindrical in shape for 'CO98067-7RU'. 'Maritime Russet' has a medium sized lightsprout and in relation to the base, a small tip whereas 'Russet Burbank' has a small lightsprout with a large tip in relation to the base. The intensity of anthocyanin colouration at the base of the lightsprout of 'Maritime Russet' is weak whereas it is of medium intensity for 'CO98067-7RU'. 'Maritime Russet' has a large leaf outline whereas it is medium sized for 'Russet Burbank'. The extent of anthocyanin colouration on the flower bud of 'Maritime Russet' is absent or very low whereas it is low for the reference varieties. The plants of 'Maritime Russet' are shorter than those of the reference varieties. The frequency of inflorescence per plant is medium for 'Maritime Russet' whereas it is low for 'Russet Burbank'. The inflorescence of 'Maritime Russet' is medium sized whereas it is small for 'Russet Burbank'. The eyes on the tuber of 'Maritime Russet' are of medium depth whereas they are deep on 'CO98067-7RU' and shallow on 'Russet Burbank'. The tuber flesh of 'Maritime Russet' is white whereas it is cream coloured for the reference varieties.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Maritime Russet' (experimental designation CO97087-2RU) originated from a cross between 'CO87009-4', as the female parent and 'W1005', as the male parent, conducted at the Colorado State University San Luis Valley Research Center, in Center, Colorado, USA in 1997. In 1998, the true potato seed resulting from the cross was sown in a greenhouse and the resulting seedling tubers field planted in Center, Colorado. One of the progeny designated as CO97087-2RU was identified in 1999. Selection criteria was based on negative mass selection for agronomic characteristics and disease resistance.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Maritime Russet' was conducted by Global Agri Services Inc. during the 2018 growing season in Drummond, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of a single, 21 metre long row containing 70 plants spaced 0.3 metres apart for each variety. The distance between rows within the trial was 0.9 metres. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety. The mean difference was significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
