Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'AAC Canada Gold Dorée' and 'AAC Confederation'

Summary: The lightsprout of 'AAC Mimosa' is broad cylindrical in shape while it is spherical for 'AAC Canada Gold Dorée'. The base of the lightsprout for 'AAC Mimosa' has a medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration while that of 'AAC Canada Gold Dorée' and 'AAC Confederation' have a strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The base of the lightsprout for 'AAC Mimosa' has a medium proportion of blue in the anthocyanin colouration while that of 'AAC Canada Gold Dorée' has an absent or low proportion of blue. The base and tip of the lightsprout for 'AAC Mimosa' have a medium density of pubescence while that of 'AAC Canada Gold Dorée' have an absent or very sparse density of pubescence. The lightsprout of 'AAC Mimosa' has few root tips while that of 'AAC Confederation' has a medium number of root tips. The extent of anthocyanin colouration on the stem of 'AAC Mimosa' is absent or very low while it is low for 'AAC Condereration'. The leaf of 'AAC Mimosa' has an intermediate openness and a medium presence of secondary leaflets while the leaf of 'AAC Confederation' is closed with a strong presence of secondary leaflets. The upper side of the leaf of 'AAC Mimosa' is medium green while it is light green for 'AAC Canada Gold Dorée'. The plants of 'AAC Mimosa' are taller than those of 'AAC Canada Gold Dorée'. The plants of 'AAC Mimosa' have a high frequency of inflorescences while the frequency is low for 'AAC Canada Gold Dorée' and medium for 'AAC Confederation'. The inner side of the corolla for 'AAC Mimosa' has a low extent of weak intensity anthocyanin colouration while it is an absent or very low extent of absent or very weak intensity for the reference varieties. The tuber for 'AAC Mimosa' is oval in shape, while it is short oval for the reference varieties.

Origin & Breeding History: 'AAC Mimosa' (experimental designations AR2013-07, F07020 and 15465-21) originated from a cross made between the experimental line F95024 and the variety 'Andover' conducted at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's Fredericton Research and Development Centre, in Fredericton, New Brunswick, in 2003. In 2006, the true potato seed resulting from the cross was sown in a greenhouse at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's Fredericton Research and Development Centre and the resulting seedling tubers planted at the Benton Ridge Research Substation of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada near Woodstock, New Brunswick, in 2007. A clone designated as 15465-21 was selected in 2007 from a single hill trial based on vine maturity, tuber appearance, shape, size and flesh colour.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'AAC Mimosa' was conducted during the 2019 growing season at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's Fredericton Research and Development Centre, in Fredericton, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of 2 replicates per variety arranged in a RCB design. Each replicate consisted of 40 plants in a 12 metre length row. The rows were spaced 90 centimetres apart and the plants were spaced 25 centimetres apart within the row. Measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety. The mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
