Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'Rosi' and 'Mozart'
Summary: The lightsprout of 'Cerata KWS' is small whereas that of 'Rosi' is medium sized. The base of the lightsprout of 'Cerata KWS' has a medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration whereas that of 'Rosi' has a strong to very strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The base of the lightsprout for 'Cerata KWS' has dense pubescence whereas the base of the lightsprout of 'Rosi' has sparse pubescence and that of 'Mozart' has a medium density of pubescence. The plants of 'Cerata KWS' have an absent or very low frequency of coalescence of the terminal and lateral leaflets whereas the plants of 'Rosi' have a low frequency of coalescence of the terminal and lateral leaflets. The plants of 'Cerata KWS' are taller than the plants of the reference varieties. The shape of the tuber of 'Cerata KWS' is round whereas it is short oval to oval for 'Rosi' and short oval for 'Mozart'. The tuber of 'Cerata KWS' has white flesh whereas the tuber of 'Rosi' has cream coloured flesh and that of 'Mozart' has medium yellow flesh.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Cerata KWS' (experimental designation KWS 06-125) originated from a cross between 'Aladine', as the female parent, and 'Mozart', as the male parent, conducted in 2006 at the KWS Potato B.V. breeding station in Noord Oost Polder, Netherlands. In 2006, the seed resulting from the cross was sown in the greenhouse. The resulting tubers were harvested and planted in the field in 2006 in Noord Oost Polder, Netherlands. 'Cerata KWS' was selected in 2006 based on negative mass selection for agronomic characteristics and disease resistance.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Cerata KWS' was conducted by Global Agri Services Inc. during the 2019 growing season in Drummond, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of a single, 21 metre long row per variety. Each row contained 70 plants spaced 0.3 metres apart with an inter-row spacing of 0.9 metres. Measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety. The mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
