Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Spunta'

Summary: The lightsprout of ‘Noha' is small and has short lateral shoots while that of ‘Spunta' is medium sized and has lateral shoots of a medium length. The base of the lightsprout of ‘Noha' has a weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration with an absent or low proportion of blue while that of ‘Spunta' has a very strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration with a high proportion of blue. The apex of the lightsprout of ‘Noha' has a medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration with absent or very sparse pubescence while that of ‘Spunta' has a strong to very strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration with sparse pubescence. The plants of ‘Noha' have a semi-upright to spreading growth habit while those of ‘Spunta' have an upright growth habit. The lower three quarters of the stem of ‘Noha' has a very low to low extent of anthocyanin colouration while that of ‘Spunta' has a high extent of anthocyanin colouration. The inner side of the corolla of ‘Noha' has a medium extent and medium intensity of anthocyanin while that of ‘Spunta' has an absent or very small extent and absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The plants of ‘Noha' are shorter than those of ‘Spunta'. The tuber of ‘Noha' has a long-oval form while those of ‘Spunta' have a long form.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Noha' (experimental designation G03SC064001) originated from the cross between ‘G90TT032003' and 'Caesar' conducted at a Germicopa breeding station in Châteauneuf-du-Faou, France in 1997. The variety was advanced from 2003 to 2006 based on visual impression, disease resistance, and processing quality with one clone designated ‘G03SC064001' in 2007. ‘G03SC064001' was further assessed from 2007 to 2013 based on visual impression, pest resistance, yield, processing quality, storability, agronomic traits, and eating quality, and was designated ‘Noha' in 2013.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Noha' was conducted by Global Agri Services Inc. in Central Blissville, New Brunswick during the 2024 growing season. The field trial consisted of a single 14.86 metre long row per variety. Rows were spaced 1.1 metres apart with each row containing 65 plants spaced 0.23 metres apart. Measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety. The mean difference was significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test. Lightsprout characteristics were assessed on 10 tubers harvested from the comparative trial and observed approximately 2.5 to 3 months after sprouting was promoted by exposing the tubers to an external agent.
