Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'Crop80' and 'Snowden'
Summary: The lightsprout of 'Crop77' is very small to small and spherical while that of 'Crop80' is medium sized and ovoid. The base of the lightsprout of 'Crop77' has a medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration while that of 'Snowden' has an absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The base of the lightsprout of 'Crop77' has an absent or low proportion of blue in the anthocyanin colouration while that of 'Crop80' has a medium proportion of blue in the anthocyanin colouration. The base of the lightsprout of 'Crop77' has a medium density of pubescence while that of 'Snowden' has sparse pubescence. The lightsprout of 'Crop77' has a medium number of root tips while those of the reference varieties have few root tips. The plants of 'Crop77' have a semi-upright growth habit while those of 'Crop80' have an upright growth habit. The stem of 'Crop77' has a low to medium extent of anthocyanin colouration halfway up the stem while the stem of 'Crop80' has a low to medium extent of anthocyanin colouration along the entire stem and that of 'Snowden' has an absent or very low extent of anthocyanin colouration. The plants of 'Crop77' are shorter than those of the the reference varieties. The plants of 'Crop77' mature late in the season while the plants of 'Crop80' mature early to mid-season and those of 'Snowden' mature mid-season. The tuber of 'Crop77' is short oval with white flesh while the tuber of 'Crop80' is oval with medium yellow flesh and that of 'Snowden' is round with cream coloured flesh. The tuber of 'Crop77' has light beige skin while that of 'Crop80' has yellow skin.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Crop77' (experimental designation 1334/14) originated from the cross between 'Summer Delight' as the female parent and 'Crop20' as the male parent conducted at the New Zealand Institute for Plant & Food Research Limited breeding station in Lincoln, New Zealand in 2005. One of the resulting progeny was selected and designated 1334/14 in 2014 based on tuber shape and crisping quality.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Crop77' was conducted by Global Agri Services Inc. in Central Blissville, New Brunswick during the 2023 growing season. The field trial consisted of a single 15.2 metre long row per variety. Rows were spaced 1.1 metres apart with each row containing 65 plants spaced 0.23 metres apart. Measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety. The mean difference was significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test. Lightsprout characteristics were assessed on 10 tubers harvested from the comparative trial and observed approximately 2.5 to 3 months after sprouting was promoted by exposing the tubers to an external agent.
